14-Year-Old Student’s Anti-Opioid Tampering Project Wins NIDA Addiction Science Award (2019)
- May 19, 2019
What is one of the best ways to ensure future generations get wiser about opioids? Just ask the future generations, of course. Recent endeavors instigated by the government and medical organizations have urged parents and teachers to involve children, teens, and young adults in the study of addiction and preventing this deadly illness from taking root. Now, in the midst of an opioid epidemic, this endeavor couldn’t be more critical. While opioids are still claiming lives, the education seems to be working. Just ask a 14-year-old student whose project about anti-opioid tampering recently won the 2019 NIDA Science Award. Let’s take a closer look and find out more information.
Tampr-X: Preventing Opioid Problems
As part of the 2019 Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF), the largest science fair for high school students across the globe, one young student presented a project in an attempt to fight the onslaught of prescription opioid abuse. 14-year-old Aditya Tummala, of Brookings High School in Brookings, South Dakota, established the importance of developing an opioid pill that is tamper-proof, thereby reducing any potential for abuse or, most importantly, addiction. In his project, “Tampr-X: A Novel Technology to Combat Prescription Opioid Abuse,” Tummala sheds light on his theoretical pill “Tamper-X,” constituting of a protein matrix which prevents crushing and eight other components that prevent tampering.
Receiving Praise from the Boss
According to Dr. Nora Volkow, director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse, the judges at the event were highly impressed with Tummala’s proposition and his thorough understanding of the intricate technology used to create opioids that are tamper-proof. Dr. Volkow emphasized how this innovative thinking must drive the medical field further into success of this caliber if we are to fight the Opioid Crisis in America.
