None of us are denying that alcohol has never been absent from television, or drunkenness for that matter. Remember the iconic scene where Lucille Ball gets intoxicated on an alcohol-based vitamin mixture? How about that moment on The Big Bang Theory when Penny spikes Sheldon’s Diet Coke with a little whiskey, resulting in everyone’s favorite nerd playing a feverish bit on the piano? From the 40s to modern day, TV programs have either included alcohol for culturally-sound reasons or to promote partying altogether. Let’s take a closer look at television’s major “drinking problem.”

Making Fun of Drunkards

Here is the truth. If we cannot laugh at the mistakes we make (all of them), then we really can’t live normal lives. How many times have you chuckled at someone who gets drunk on TV and thought, “Wow, that happened to my friend in college”? On the flip side, you might laugh hysterically when you see a character fall down two flights of stairs. In a miraculous twist, none of these characters suffer from blood-alcohol poisoning or break every bone in their bodies. That’s the point of surreal comedy.

However, some critics have pointed out that the drunk jokes are starting to wear thin, mostly because there are too many of these. For example, while Seinfeld and Friends included a few jokes about intoxication, shows like Two and a Half Men and How I Met Your Mother tend to advertise drunkenness to an extent that alcohol has become a media cliché.

Too Overdramatic

On that note, you may have noticed that this overabundance of alcohol incidences is not only common on sitcoms but is also showcased on reality TV. Programs like Jersey Shore pretty much capitalized on drunken debauchery, while the numerous Housewives shows dive into the wine mom culture. Needless to say, American television seems to have a thing for booze.

Seeking Treatment for Alcohol Abuse or Alcoholism

Alcohol withdrawal can easily be one of the most frightening aspects of healing. During the course of the recovery process, you will suffer from minor to severe symptoms that may include night sweats, hallucinations, fevers, anxiety, and sadness, but always remember that you can find the strength to overcome these problems. However, you must always seek medical attention when you have decided to cut ties with alcohol, as the withdrawal process can be notoriously dangerous. Never attempt to do this without the supervision of a trained specialist.

If you are suffering from a severe case of alcoholism or alcohol abuse, or have a friend or loved one who is coping with this illness, get in touch with Asana Recovery today. Our professional team of counselors and healthcare experts will help you endure the painful process of alcohol withdrawal and detox and guide you along the rocky road of rehabilitation. Soon enough, you will experience a faster and much more efficient recovery.

If you want to find out more about our residential treatment or supervised detoxification/withdrawal programs or enroll in one of these programs today, we are ready and waiting to speak with you at your leisure and your disclosure.
