ADDRESSING WORKPLACE DRUG USE
- May 20, 2018
Drug and alcohol use in the workplace is a rampant problem in the United States. According to a 2013 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) conducted by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), almost 70% of illicit drug users, more than 75% of heavy drinkers, and nearly 80% of adult binge drinkers are employed in the workforce either full or part-time.
The National Safety Council has developed a tool to allow employers to estimate the costs of workplace substance use in their offices. If these costs are threatening the financial security of your company, you should consider implementing a drug testing and educational program at your workplace.
Studies have shown that drug testing and educational programs can be extremely effective in reducing workplace drug use. They have also been found to provide a number of other benefits including improved morale, decreased workplace accidents, and workers’ compensation filings, increased productivity, and reduced employee turnover. These benefits can be so significant, some professionals believe they entirely outweigh the costs of implementation.
If you believe that one of your employees is struggling with a substance addiction, for both their sake and yours, you should facilitate their treatment as soon as reasonably practical.
