As we continue to fight the good fight against the Opioid Crisis on our shores, our long-distance neighbors in Australia are still plowing through a dangerous wall of meth. Due to the aptly-named “ice epidemic,” Australian authorities have been laying down aggressive hammers of justice as they crack down on drug dealers and save addicts’ lives across the country. However, in an amazing feat, the Federal Police recently busted a massive shipment of crystal meth, estimated at a staggering $13.5 million AUD. Let’s take a closer look at what the officers uncovered.
Resourceful Criminal Syndicate
Based on a recent report, the Australian Federal Police (AFP) announced that they had seized an overwhelmingly large shipment of crystal meth after raiding a street vehicle. Overall, officers have estimated the 18 kilograms of meth have a street value of $13.5 million AUD and are equated to roughly 180,000 potential drug deals. In an interview, AFP Superintendent Gail McClure speculated that a resourceful and well-informed crime syndicate is possibly behind this shipment and had been targeting people living in South Australia. Officers also confiscated $13,000 AUD in cash, cash-counting tools, analog and digital scales, and documents for travel.
An Unsurprising Discovery
Superintendent McClure explained how officials have suspected that underground syndicates have been responsible for importations for some time now. According to the report, one of the suspected men, a 51-year old, had previously been inspected after exiting a flight from Bali one week prior to the bust. Ultimately, the Joint Agency Ice Strike Team and the National Anti-Gang Squad SA joined forces to inspect air cargo that was connected to the suspect. As of now, further investigations are underway.
