When it comes to the debate over legalizing marijuana, the State of New York is slowly and steadily treading through the water. As of March 30, 2018, the Empire State has only legalized medical marijuana and has yet to announce if it will allow the recreational use of pot. However, one breakthrough has recently made headlines. Citiva, a company that is dedicated to the research of cannabis, has opened the very first dispensary in Brooklyn, New York. Let’s take a closer look at this unique news story and see what this could mean for the future of marijuana use in the United States.
The Park Slope Dispensary
Overall, the Citiva dispensary will the join the current lineup of 10 medical cannabis facilities in New York City. Due to rigorous state law, these sellers can only offer a lineup of products that excludes flower-based materials and edibles. Permitted products will be restricted to topicals, vaping pens, oils, and pills. By law, the facility can only provide medical marijuana to patients suffering from PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder), multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, ALS, and HIV/AIDS.
Additional dispensaries that are part of the NYC medical marijuana community include MedMen on 5th Avenue (Manhattan) and Hemp Garden (Williamsburg).
Once complete, the Citiva building will be 2,000 square feet in length. It is located on 202 Flatbush Avenue, close to the esteemed Barclays Center.
What This Means for Brooklyn, NYC
Brooklyn, NYC is definitely far behind the game, at least when it is compared to other major cities like Los Angeles, Portland, and Seattle. One particularly strong factor, however, is the recent CBD wellness promotion that has become something of a phenomenon in the city. Health stores in Brooklyn’s most well-to-do neighborhoods like Greenpoint are now offering CBD products that include body oils, kava bars, and lattes spiked with cannabis. While Brooklyn struggles to catch up in the race, patients are still receiving viable marijuana prescriptions. Who knows what the future holds from here?
