Have you ever wondered how famous composers could create such spellbinding, heart-pounding, enchanting, or thunderous symphonies in the past? Whether we attribute it to divine inspiration or just a bout of incredible luck, none of us can deny the magic that fills classic music produced by orchestras. Ludwig van Beethoven, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Ottorino Respighi, and even modern composers like John Williams have taken us on journeys into other worlds we might’ve never explored before. So on that note, you might not be too shocked to hear that some of the greats really did enter a few new levels of consciousness, to an extent. Let’s take a closer look at some classical music composers who used drugs.

Hector Berlioz (1803-1869)

Critics of classics music agree that this famous composer’s Symphonie Fantastique was the time period’s equivalent of an acid trip, so you won’t be shocked to learn that Hector Berlioz liked to experiment with opium from time to time. So why did he take this painkiller? Like many other men and women during the time, Berlioz consumed this drug to open his “mind’s eye” and take a journey into the, for lack of a better word, fantastic and weird.

Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827)

Notorious for his fiery temper, this German composer used his rage to his advantage, pioneering new forms of music for future generations. Ultimately, Beethoven was the rock star of his generation, even sporting a head of wild gray hair to match. To date, his 5th Symphony and 9th Symphony are popular among children both young and old. Nevertheless, the composer was a frequent alcohol abuser, as an autopsy confirmed.

Frédéric Chopin (1810-1849)

While he might not be famous for writing big-orchestral symphonies, this composer enchanted audiences with his spiritually-uplifting piano solos. Critics at the time described Frédéric Chopin as a master of the piano, possessing a skill that surpassed any adults of the time; an old soul in a young body. Nevertheless, even the great pianist fell victim to opium, which he would melt on a sugar cube before consuming.
