What to Do in a Drug Overdose Emergency
If you suspect someone is experiencing a drug overdose, act immediately. Overdoses can be fatal within minutes, but quick action saves lives.
Signs of an overdose:
- Unresponsive or unable to be woken up
- Slow, shallow, or stopped breathing
- Blue or gray lips, fingertips, or skin
- Pinpoint pupils (opioid overdose)
- Choking, gurgling, or snoring sounds
- Seizures
- Limp body
What to do:
- Call 911 immediately. Tell them you suspect a drug overdose. Provide the address and stay on the line.
- Administer naloxone (Narcan) if available. Naloxone reverses opioid overdoses and is safe to use even if you’re unsure whether opioids are involved. Spray into one nostril or inject into the thigh. If there’s no response after 2–3 minutes, administer additional doses every 2–3 minutes until the person responds or emergency services arrive — with fentanyl involved, multiple doses may be needed. Naloxone is available without a prescription at most pharmacies in California.
- Place the person on their side (recovery position) to prevent choking if they vomit.
- Stay with them until emergency services arrive. Keep them warm and monitor breathing.
- Do not put anything in their mouth.
California’s Good Samaritan Law protects people who call 911 during an overdose from prosecution for minor drug offenses. Do not hesitate to call for help — it could save a life.
When to Seek Professional Treatment
Not every difficult moment is a crisis — but if you’re reading this page, something brought you here. These are signs that it may be time to seek professional support:
- You’re using substances to get through the day
- Your mental health is affecting your ability to work, maintain relationships, or take care of yourself
- You’ve tried to stop using on your own and couldn’t
- Your anxiety, depression, or trauma symptoms are getting worse, not better
- Loved ones have expressed concern about your substance use or mental health
- You’ve experienced withdrawal symptoms when you’ve tried to stop
- You feel like you’re running out of options
Asana Recovery provides outpatient addiction and mental health treatment in Orange County. Our programs include PHP, IOP, standard outpatient care, and sober living. We treat both addiction and mental health conditions — together or independently — through integrated dual diagnosis treatment.
You don’t have to be in crisis to ask for help. In fact, the best time to start treatment is before things reach that point.
Where to Get Naloxone (Narcan) in Orange County
Naloxone is a life-saving medication that reverses opioid overdoses. In California, naloxone is available without a prescription at most pharmacies, including CVS, Walgreens, and Rite Aid. Many locations carry both the nasal spray (Narcan) and injectable forms.
- OC Health Care Agency — distributes free naloxone through community programs and harm reduction events
- Any California pharmacy — available without a prescription under a statewide standing order
- Community organizations — many local nonprofits distribute naloxone at no cost
If you or someone in your household uses opioids — whether prescribed or illicit — having naloxone on hand could save a life. It is safe, easy to use, and has no effect on someone who hasn’t taken opioids.
You don't have to wait for a crisis to get help.
If you’re struggling with addiction, mental health challenges, or both — Asana Recovery is here. Call (949) 763-3440 for a free, confidential assessment. Our admissions team is available 24/7.
