Cartoon Characters Who Definitely Tried Drugs On-Screen

CARTOON CHARACTERS WHO DEFINITELY TRIED DRUGS ON-SCREEN

To imply the use of drugs or alcohol in children’s programming can provide enough humor for understanding adults while also providing bizarre humor for children. But when do some beloved characters take things too far? Since the more PC times have taken the reins of mainstream programming and children’s shows, we don’t tend to see too many drug references (blatant ones, at least) in these movies and TV series. When was the last time you saw Goofy fighting for a cigarette? Or Felix the Cat getting punch drunk? Still, animators and storytellers manage to slip in some doozies here and there, and these scenes are unforgettably weird. Let’s take a closer look at some cartoon characters who definitely tried drugs on screen.

Tripping on Berries (The Good Dinosaur, 2015)

Although it didn’t match the standards of other hits like Toy Story (1995) and The Incredibles (2004), Disney/Pixar still managed to produce a unique twist on prehistory in The Good Dinosaur, the tale of friendship between a little Apatosaurus named Arlo and a little caveboy named Spot. On their journey, though, the duo indulges in some fermented fruit. The rest of the scene speaks for itself. Let’s just say the movie helps us realize how songs like “Sweet Leaf” or “White Rabbit” were produced.

Kelp Shakes (SpongeBob Squarepants, 1999present)

Fans of this insane show will instantly tell you that it’s full of drug references. Not to mention the numerous innuendos. Many people go as far as saying the cartoon characters were always on drugs. But one episode of SpongeBob Squarepants takes the kelp cake (literally). In the episode “Best Frenemies” (season 4, episode 78b), after a new beverage called “kelp shakes” starts taking the city of Bikini Bottom by storm, the residents eventually become physically attached to this drink. The characters were willing to get to it by any means necessary. Obviously, that description alone reveals how powerful addictive substances can be.

Surviving the 60s (Cars, 2006)

The fact that two Pixar films are on this list speaks volumes. One character in Cars stands out as a single, powerful drug reference. After crash-landing in Radiator Springs, Lightning McQueen meets a VW bus called Filmore (voiced by George Carlin). Filmore is completely spaced out and praises music from Woodstock. Likewise, one character blatantly asks the bus if the 60s were good to him. This garners no response, but we were still chuckling.

Marihuana – “Speedy Gonzalez” (various dates)

If you are a fan of the Looney Tunes franchise (who isn’t?), then you are definitely familiar with Speedy Gonzalez. How could anyone forget the adorable Mexican mouse with the power of super speed. Small and devious, Speedy Gonzalez might easily be one of the cutest of the Tunes. But he and his brother tend to sing about a certain green plant throughout the series. In their rendition of an innocent children’s song “La Cucaracha,” Speedy’s brother Slow Poke sings about how a cockroach cannot stand because he hasn’t smoked pot.

Drunken Witch – Pink Panther (1969)

After his iconic appearance in the iconic 1963 film, the fabulous Pink Panther has become one of the most popular cartoon characters of his time. He even starred in a hit series of shorts. However, in the fairy-tale-themed episode Pink-A-Rella, the story of Cinderella gets a bit of a modern makeover, in more ways than one. In the episode, a seriously drunken witch drops her magic wand. The Pink Panther then uses it to grant the wishes of a young woman. What’s even funnier is the fact that the witch continues her drunken antics even after she gets her weapon of choice back.

Primate Punch – Darkwing Duck (1991)

If you have never heard of the term “jungle juice” (a term for dangerous alcohol cocktail), then you might not get the brunt of the joke presented in the hit series Darkwing Duck (part of original Disney Afternoon lineup). In one episode, “The Apes of Wrath,” the egotistical duck superhero, his sidekick Launchpad, and adoptive daughter Gosalyn meet an anthropologist and her gorilla companions. At one point, Darkwing is offered a drink called “primate punch,”. Then proceeds to bounce around the jungle like he’s high.
