Have you ever looked back at some of the shows you watched as a kid and thought “what in the world were my parents thinking, letting me watch that?” Obviously, each generation has witnessed some crazy moments in cartoons that forced our two-year old selves to scratch our heads in confusion, burst out laughing, or cringe in fear. (Does anyone remember that “pink elephants” scene from Dumbo?) Even our TV shows weren’t exempt from drug and booze jokes, which seemed to rule the roost in entire episodes, but which ones were the most memorable? Which episodes stand out for having exceptionally funny drunk or high moments? For fun, let’s take a look at three direct references to drugs and alcohol in classic cartoons.

Marihuana – “Speedy Gonzalez” (various dates)

If you are a fan of the Looney Tunes franchise (who isn’t?), then you are definitely familiar with an adorable Mexican mouse with the power of super speed. Small and devious, Speedy Gonzalez might easily be one of the cutest of the Tunes, but he and his brother tend to sing about a certain green plant throughout the series. In their rendition of an innocent children’s song “La Cucaracha,” Speedy’s brother Slow Poke sings about how a cockroach cannot stand because he hasn’t smoked pot.

Drunken Witch – Pink Panther (1969)

DIRECT REFERENCES TO DRUGS AND ALCOHOL IN CLASSIC CARTOONS After his iconic appearance in the iconic 1963 film, the fabulous Pink Panther has become one of the most popular cartoon characters of his time and even starred in a hit series of shorts. However, in the fairy-tale-themed episode Pink-A-Rella, the story of Cinderella gets a bit of a modern makeover, in more ways than one. In the episode, a seriously drunken witch drops her magic wand, which the Pink Panther uses to grant the wishes of a young woman. What’s even funnier is the fact that the witch continues her drunken antics even after she gets her weapon of choice back.

Primate Punch – Darkwing Duck (1991)

If you have never heard of the term “jungle juice” (a term for dangerous alcohol cocktail), then you might not get the brunt of the joke presented in the hit series Darkwing Duck (part of original Disney Afternoon lineup). In one episode, “The Apes of Wrath,” the egotistical duck superhero, his sidekick Launchpad, and adoptive daughter Gosalyn meet an anthropologist and her gorilla companions. At one point, Darkwing is offered a drink called “primate punch,” and proceeds to bounce around the jungle like he’s high.

While certainly intended to be funny, these comedic moments can also be used as an opportunity to tell your kids about some of the unpleasant things adults like to use.
