EVALUATING TREATMENT CENTER PERFORMANCE
- May 15, 2018
Deciding to enroll in an addiction treatment program is a critical first step and a small victory in itself. Choosing the right treatment center can be equally important, but the lack of uniform standards with which to evaluate the performance of different treatment centers often adds frustrating complications to the decision-making process.
A common way to measure the success of different treatment centers is to compare the rates of relapse among their patients. Some treatment centers will instead measure their success by comparing the number of their former patients that have relapsed to the number of former patients that have remained sober. Given the high likelihood of relapse among chronic diseases, including substance addiction, both of these measures are somewhat flawed.
Treatment engagement is a somewhat more universally accepted measure of success. Patients that remain engaged in outpatient treatment after completion of a residential program have better outcomes than those who don’t, and high rates of treatment engagement can be indicative of the quality of care provided.
Without any uniform professional standard to assess treatment center performance, patient evaluations and word of mouth recommendations can also be quite valuable. Ultimately, however, any choice in treatment center must be focused on the unique needs of the individual seeking help in order for there to be any chance of success.
