Once someone comes to the realization that they have developed an addiction, there are a number of options to consider when starting the journey to recovery. Once they have decided they are ready to quit, their recovery is only just beginning.

There are an array of different types of treatment programs to consider when looking to recover from a drug addiction. HelpGuide.org lists some of the options that are available, from residential treatment to outpatient treatment. While one option may be good for one person’s addiction, another option may be better for someone else.

Here are some of the ways in which these treatment options function, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse.

Long-term residential treatment

  • Patients receive 24/7 care for several months.
  • Patients are part of a structured program that has them consider the reasons that they have turned to drugs or alcohol.
  • While participating in this program, patients learn to reflect on behaviors and beliefs that led to their addiction. They learn how to adopt new beliefs about the world and relationships with others.
  • Several of these treatment programs can help people in life after their treatment, such as helping with employment training.

Short-term residential treatment

  • These short-term programs last three to six weeks.
  • Originally developed as a way to combat alcohol abuse, these types of shorter treatment programs have been adapted to deal with all kinds of addictions.
  • Following this program, patients will stay involved in different types of treatment such as extended outpatient therapy and self-help groups.

Outpatient treatment

  • This is an option that may suit people who must continue to hold a job or are strongly supported by people in their life.
  • Some programs can be a more intensive day treatment, while others can offer drug education at a lower intensity.

Individualized drug counseling

  • This treatment addresses a person’s personal issues that may be contributing to their drug addiction.
  • Patients will be encouraged to take part in a 12-step program in addition to receiving individual therapy.

Group counseling

  • People with addiction problems are able to share their thoughts and experiences with their peers.
  • Group therapy is often paired with individual counseling or other forms of treatment.

HelpGuide.org suggests that while considering these types of treatment, several factors should be kept in mind.

Every addiction requires something different out of a recovery program. Some addictions are more intense than others. Alcohol may require a different kind of treatment than another type of addiction. In order to make sure that a recovery option is the right fit, a person must explore the pros and cons of the different options and research how each one can help with their unique situation.
