Since marijuana was re-introduced (ever so slowly) into the culture of the United States, you may have noticed that several states have been taking a stronger stand in favor of the drug than others, particularly states along the Pacific and East Coasts. Besides huge pot powerhouses like California and Colorado, however, Massachusetts has recently ascended to the ranks of marijuana leadership now that one critical step has finally been made by state lawmakers. Now, after a period of two years, the first legal weed dispensaries in Massachusetts have officially opened. Today, November 20, 2018, New England Treatment Access (NETA) opened in Northampton, and Cultivate in Leicester. Although multiple Bay State stores have yet to open, the emergence of these two dispensaries serves as a huge landmark for the marijuana community and the country, in general. Let’s take a closer look at what we can expect from NETA and Cultivate.
Opening of NETA in Northampton
According to reports, the line at the NETA store was so long that people were standing on the parking lot and down two connected streets, and this marijuana fever did not seem to be dying down anytime soon. In fact, people started showing up at the front doors at 12:35 AM this morning to ensure they were the first customers and, at an astonishing record, these people stood in line for over 22 hours just to make sure they could get some of the first store-bought legal pot in the Bay State.
Interestingly, the first customer to purchase legal recreational pot in Massachusetts was none other than the Northampton mayor, David Narkewicz. Recently, he purchased a chocolate bar from NETA and explained his gratitude to NETA for the company’s goal to shed a positive light on marijuana. While Narkewicz does not plan to eat the pot candy, he does want to display it as a historical artifact.
Starting Point for Sales
So, when did all of this activity start? While NETA opened its door at 8:00 AM, Cultivate did not open up to the public until 10:00 AM. People who plan to shop at these locations are required to have a photo ID, cash, and a ton of patience. Like the incidences in Canada, the long lines at the Massachusetts stores do not seem to be dying down.
