Although cocaine might be a giant thorn in the backside of the United States (as it has been for nearly a century), we have to consider the fact that Europe is also taking a massive binge on this unpleasantly overbearing white stimulant. A recent report suggests this little power-booster is widespread across wealthy European nations, but some of the epicenters might actually surprise you. For example, did you know that five cities in Switzerland have actually made the list of top ten epicenters of cocaine problems across the continent? Let’s take a closer look and find out some more information.
Studying That Wastewater
As part of an analysis conducted by the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction (EMCDDA), in conjunction with the SCORE Group, back in March 2017, officials assessed different types of wastewater collected from 56 cities and 19 countries across Europe. Over the course of this week-long report, the team of researchers studied these wastewater samples (belonging to an estimated 43 million people) for the presence of dangerous drugs that included cocaine, methamphetamine/crystal meth, amphetamine, and MDMA. In the end, the EMCDDA determined that five cities in Switzerland showed particularly high use of cocaine.
Not Just Chocolate in This Town
When you consider the impact of Switzerland on the modern world, you have to wonder how this small, charming neighbor to Germany harbors such severe cocaine problems. First of all, keep in mind that (on average) cocaine use is fairly uncommon among Europeans, overall, so any appearance of the drug is bound to make headlines.
Here is a closer look at the Swiss cities with the highest rates of cocaine use, in comparison to other cities on the Top 10 list:
- 2nd place: Zurich
- 4th place: St. Gallen
- 5th place: Geneva
- 8th place: Basel
- 9th place: Bern
