Remember the town in the movie Footloose, the uptight place that pretty much restricted life itself? While the town of Bomont might seem too far-fetched for the real world, believe it or not, there is a town in Canada that is remarkably similar to Kevin Bacon’s stomping ground. Take a trip past the Montana border and you will eventually arrive in Taber, Alberta, probably one of the most infamous anti-progressive locations in North America. Unless you have called South Alberta home, you will only know about Taber for a deadly school shooting (1999), an anti-swearing bylaw (2015), and its prevention of a Pride flag from being flown (2018). Based on this information, Taber is the last place you would expect to find a marijuana dispensary. Nevertheless, the controversial little town has announced it will set up its first one up very soon. Let’s take a closer look and see what’s in store for the Alberta town.
Today, in Taber News
Recently, the town of Taber developed a resolution to lobby the Canadian federal government to put a hold on cannabis legalization and rethink the matter. Back in September, Mayor Andrew Prokop urged officials to exercise caution and expressed his belief that the sale of recreational marijuana would not contribute anything positive to Canadian lives.
Nevertheless, more recently, things seem to have changed. After a grueling 8 months of attending town meetings and lobbying for the plant, Bruce Decoste (a resident of the town) convinced the council to permit recreational cannabis sales in the limits of Taber. In an interview, Decoste expressed how shocked he felt after receiving the news. At this time, he is undergoing the process of licensing his cannabis store Reckless Vape Shop.
How Did He Pull It Off?
In the interview with Leafly, Decoste explains he was able to sway the town council in his direction based on two concepts. First, he expressed how a neighboring major city (only 40 miles away) would be the only available option for weed sales, which would leave a huge gash in Taber’s economy. Likewise, he expressed how Taber could provide a safe, legal way for the residents to obtain the drug.
