Over the years, scientific analyses have demonstrated that certain parts of the world tend to love alcohol more than others. For example, while the United States, Australia, and Canada might promote drinking cultures as part of socialization, other countries across the Middle East and Eurasia might frown upon drunkenness and problem drinking for social or religious dedication. Nevertheless, once you have taken a long look at the reports, each of us can agree that Ireland definitely has a major drinking problem, one that is apparently getting worse. Let’s take a closer look at the rate of alcohol consumption within this tiny member of the United Kingdom and see why it’s so dangerous.

A European Booze Capital

According to a new report in The Lancet, alcohol intake and the population of Ireland are simultaneously increasing, a predictable outcome of growth. At this time, a staggering 84% of Irish adults consume some type of booze, one of the highest rates of drinking on the European continent; and one study has projected this rate to increase by 2030. In fact, from 2010 to 2017, alcohol consumption per capita rose from 12.33 to 13.19 liters, while lifetime abstainers have decreased from 11% to 9%, a rate that never seemed to be high in this country.

Why the Love of Booze?

The study’s author, Jakob Manthey, from TU Dresden in Germany, comments that the World Health Organization’s goal of reducing alcohol intake will not be accomplished by 2025 (officials hoped to reduce the rate by 10%). Overall, Manthey warns that booze will continue to be a major risk factor for human health across the globe. We can only hope things will take a turn for the better, and this study is proven wrong.
