Fans of the classic sport of baseball will no doubt recognize the name Josh Hamilton. From his time with the Cincinnati Reds all the way to his last round with the Texas Rangers, this baseball player quickly proved that he had the right stuff for the sport from a very early age. During the 1999 MLB draft for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, Hamilton was considered a blue chip (professional draft) player and was promoted to an All-Star team at the start of the 2008 season. Later, he would become the 16th player in the history of the MLB to hit 4 home runs during a single game. However, what many baseball fans will also recognize is his long struggle with cocaine and alcohol, which initially put a halt to his career in 1999. Let’s take a closer look and find out more about Josh Hamilton’s difficult struggle with addiction.

A Mad Descent into Relapse

In early 2009, Josh Hamilton had been taking part in a boot camp program for athletes when, after 3 years of making it through sobriety, he tearfully called his wife to tell her he had relapsed. As he explained, the night before, he had gone to a pizza restaurant that also had a bar, and he ordered a vodka mixed with cranberry juice. As expected, one drink led to another, and he quickly became drunk. Although he couldn’t remember details from the incident, Hamilton told his wife Katie that people probably took pictures of the incident.

New Support System

In the same manner as WWE athletes Steve “Sting” Borden and Shawn Michaels, and another baseball icon Darryl Strawberry, Hamilton eventually turned to building a spiritual core to overcome his problems. Now, he has designed a unique support system comprising alcoholism rehab and a Christian belief system. Besides his wife and parents, Hamilton is supported by his pastor and fellow Texas Rangers players and considered all actions off the field as a form of ministry. If anything, his experience showcases how your spirit needs to heal just as much as your mind and body.
