You could easily say that the State of Iowa had a pretty exciting weekend, at least for the pot community. This Saturday, medical marijuana patients lined up outside the five registered stores in Council Bluffs, Davenport, Sioux City, Windsor Heights, and Waterloo to purchase a variety of products including capsules, tinctures, and topicals. After the announcement on Tuesday, November 27, 2018, the public was more than excited to have the ability to purchase their invaluable medication for cancer and epilepsy. (However, keep in mind that smoking is still 100% illegal in the state). Now that the Iowa stores have received their first grouping of customers, what is the official report on the situation? Let’s take a closer look at the situation and find out more.

CBD as a Calming Agent to Seizures

According to Lucas Nelson (general manager of the MedPharm dispensary in Des Moines), people have not only been inquiring about the opening date but also about how they can help the community. Ultimately, up until 8:00 AM on Saturday, December 1, 2018, over 12 patients had already lined up outside the MedPharm dispensary.

Around this time, Katie Peikes (reporter for Iowa Public Radio) interviewed William Rose, whose 13-year old son Christian suffers from epilepsy. At the opening of MedPharm, he was one of the first caregivers to purchase CBD drops for his son, who uses the marijuana extract as a medication for his severe seizures. Before, Rose had to travel to Colorado to obtain the drug, which he claims has also been a wonderful suppressant for his son’s ADHD, as well. Ultimately, the CBD oil has completely halted Christian’s seizures, providing incredible relief to the young boy.

1,500 Patients and Counting

Overall, Iowa has granted medical marijuana cards to 1,500 patients and caregivers, who can now purchase these products without fear of legal intervention. However, the patients must qualify for one of the following conditions to obtain the card and medical marijuana:

  • Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)
  • Cancer (severe/chronic pain, nausea, vomiting, cachexia, and wasting)
  • Multiple sclerosis (severe and continuous muscle spasms)
  • HIV/AIDs (Iowa Section Code 141A.1)
  • Crohn’s disease
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Excruciating or chronic pain

Ultimately, cannabis products cannot contain more than 3% THC.
