Mental Health Conditions We Treat

Our clinical team treats a full range of mental health conditions through structured outpatient programs. Each page below provides in-depth information about the condition, how we diagnose it, the therapies we use, and what treatment looks like at Asana Recovery.

Depression & Mood Disorders

Major depressive disorder, persistent depressive disorder, bipolar disorder, and mood dysregulation. Symptoms include prolonged sadness, hopelessness, fatigue, loss of interest, sleep disruption, and difficulty functioning in daily life.

Anxiety & Panic Disorders

Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), social anxiety, panic disorder, agoraphobia, and specific phobias. Symptoms include persistent worry, racing thoughts, physical tension, panic attacks, and avoidance behavior.

Trauma & PTSD

Post-traumatic stress disorder, complex PTSD, and trauma-related conditions stemming from combat, abuse, assault, accidents, childhood adversity, and other traumatic experiences. Symptoms include flashbacks, nightmares, hypervigilance, emotional numbness, and avoidance.

ADHD, OCD & Behavioral Health

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and related behavioral health conditions. Symptoms include difficulty focusing, impulsivity, intrusive thoughts, compulsive behaviors, and difficulty with executive function.

Personality Disorders

Borderline personality disorder, narcissistic personality disorder, avoidant personality disorder, and other personality-related conditions. Symptoms include emotional instability, relationship difficulties, identity disturbance, and impulsive behavior.

Adjustment Disorders

Stress-related conditions triggered by major life changes — job loss, divorce, relocation, grief, or other significant transitions. Symptoms include anxiety, depression, difficulty coping, and behavioral changes disproportionate to the stressor.

When Mental Health and Addiction Overlap

According to SAMHSA, approximately 50% of people with severe mental health conditions also experience substance use disorders, and roughly the same proportion of people with substance use disorders have co-occurring mental health conditions. At Asana Recovery, integrated dual diagnosis treatment is our default model — we treat both conditions simultaneously by the same clinical team, because addressing one without the other rarely leads to lasting recovery.

Trauma & Addiction

How PTSD and trauma drive substance use as a coping mechanism — and why integrated treatment with EMDR, CBT, and trauma-informed care produces better outcomes than treating either condition alone.

Anxiety & Substance Use

The self-medication cycle between anxiety disorders and substances like alcohol, benzodiazepines, and opioids. How rebound anxiety and withdrawal create a spiral that only integrated treatment can break.

Depression & Alcohol

Why alcohol makes depression worse despite temporarily numbing the pain. How antidepressants are less effective when combined with regular drinking, and why treating both conditions together is essential.

Treatment Approaches for Mental Health

Every therapy we use at Asana Recovery is evidence-based — grounded in clinical research and proven effective for the populations we serve. Your treatment plan combines multiple approaches based on your diagnosis, history, and goals.

Medical Care & Medication Management

Medical evaluation, medication prescribing, and ongoing monitoring overseen by Dr. Joseph DeSanto, M.D., Asana Recovery’s Medical Director. Dr. DeSanto is Board Certified in Internal Medicine with a specialty focus in Addiction Medicine, bringing more than a decade of experience leading medical care at prominent Southern California treatment programs. Our integrated psychiatric prescribers work alongside Dr. DeSanto to manage antidepressants, anti-anxiety medications, mood stabilizers, sleep aids, and Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) for opioid and alcohol use disorders.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

Identifies and restructures the negative thought patterns that drive anxiety, depression, and substance use. One of the most extensively researched and effective therapies for mental health conditions.

Comprehensive Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)

Comprehensive DBT delivered through all four core skill modules — mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness — via structured group sessions plus individual therapy. Especially effective for borderline personality disorder, emotional dysregulation, and self-destructive behaviors.

EMDR & Trauma-Focused Care

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is the gold-standard PTSD treatment endorsed by the American Psychological Association, World Health Organization, and U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Every aspect of treatment is delivered through a trauma-informed lens — recognizing how trauma shapes behavior, coping strategies, and the treatment experience itself. Learn more about our outpatient PTSD and trauma treatment program.

Individual Therapy

One-on-one sessions with a licensed therapist tailored to your specific history, symptoms, triggers, and goals. The foundation of any mental health treatment plan.

Group Therapy

Facilitated peer support sessions that reduce isolation, build social skills, and provide accountability. Especially valuable for clients whose mental health conditions have led to withdrawal from relationships and community.

Family Therapy

Mental health conditions affect the entire family system. Family therapy rebuilds communication, repairs relationships, establishes healthy boundaries, and helps loved ones understand the recovery process.

Integrative & Wellness Therapies

Mindfulness, meditation, nutritional guidance, fitness, and holistic practices that support whole-person healing alongside clinical therapies.

Programs That Support Mental Health Recovery

Asana Recovery’s outpatient programs are designed to provide the clinical intensity needed for meaningful recovery while allowing you to maintain work, school, family, and daily life. The same clinical team supports clients across every level of care.

Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)

5–6 hours daily, 5 days per week. The most intensive outpatient level of care, with medical oversight, daily therapy, and group programming. Ideal for clients who need significant daily structure during acute mental health episodes.

Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

5–6 hours daily, 5 days per week. The most intensive outpatient level of care, with medical oversight, daily therapy, and group programming. Ideal for clients who need significant daily structure during acute mental health episodes.

Virtual IOP for California Residents

Same evidence-based outpatient treatment delivered via secure encrypted video from anywhere in California. Ideal for clients with demanding schedules, in remote areas of California, or who prefer the privacy of home for therapy.

Standard Outpatient Program

Ongoing therapy and support for clients stepping down from IOP who need continued structure with greater independence.

Sober Living

Structured, substance-free housing in Orange County that provides stability, peer accountability, and community support during mental health recovery. Especially valuable for clients who need a safe environment while building daily routines and coping skills.

Mental Health Treatment by Population

Certain populations face unique mental health challenges that require specialized understanding. We’ve developed programming tailored to these groups:

Young Adults (18–26)

Anxiety, depression, identity struggles, academic pressure, social media impact, substance experimentation, and the transition to adulthood — all addressed through programming designed for this age group.

Veterans

PTSD, combat trauma, reintegration challenges, and the mental health impact of military service. Confidential treatment that respects military culture and service identity through our Helping Heroes Program.

First Responders

Occupational trauma, secondary traumatic stress, burnout, and the pressures of careers where vulnerability is seen as weakness. Confidential, career-sensitive treatment.

Airline Industry Professionals

Irregular schedules, sleep disruption, time away from family, and regulatory pressure. Confidential treatment that accounts for FAA HIMS and FADAP requirements.

Educators

Teacher burnout, secondary trauma from student crises, anxiety, depression, and the fear that seeking help could jeopardize careers or credentials. Flexible scheduling around the school year, including summer intensive programming.

Couples

Relationship strain, codependency, communication breakdown, and mental health challenges that affect both partners. Structured couples therapy alongside individual treatment.
