Depression, bipolar disorder, and other mood conditions don’t have to control your life. Asana Recovery’s outpatient mood disorder treatment in Orange County uses evidence-based therapies — including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) for depression, Behavioral Activation, Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) for mood stability, and Interpersonal Therapy (IPT) — to help you regain emotional stability, rebuild hope, and develop lasting management strategies. Programs available across PHP, IOP, Virtual IOP, and Standard Outpatient levels of care — with integrated dual diagnosis support for clients whose mood disorder co-occurs with substance use.
Mood disorders are a category of mental health conditions characterized by significant disturbances in emotional state that interfere with daily functioning. Unlike temporary feelings of sadness or occasional mood swings, mood disorders involve persistent changes in mood that affect how you think, feel, and handle everyday activities.
According to the National Institute of Mental Health, approximately 21.4% of U.S. adults experience a mood disorder at some point in their lives. These conditions are among the most common mental health challenges—and among the most treatable with proper care.
At Asana Recovery, we provide comprehensive outpatient treatment for mood disorders through our Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP), Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), Virtual IOP for California residents, and Standard Outpatient programs. Our evidence-based approach combines individual therapy, group support, family involvement, and — when appropriate — psychiatric medication management to help you achieve lasting emotional stability across all phases of recovery.
"Mood disorders are highly treatable conditions. With the right combination of therapy, support, and sometimes medication, most people experience significant improvement in their symptoms and quality of life."
— American Psychiatric Association
Per the DSM-5, Major Depressive Disorder is diagnosed when five or more of the following symptoms are present for at least two consecutive weeks, with at least one symptom being either depressed mood or loss of interest:
If you recognize five or more of these in yourself or a loved one — especially if they’ve persisted for two weeks or longer and are interfering with daily functioning — it’s time to talk with a clinical professional. Depression rarely resolves on its own, but it responds reliably to treatment.
At Asana Recovery, depression treatment is grounded in the therapies with the strongest evidence base for Major Depressive Disorder:
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) for Depression — Considered first-line treatment for depression. CBT helps you identify and restructure the negative thought patterns (Beck’s “cognitive triad” of negative views about self, world, and future) that maintain depressive episodes. Decades of research consistently demonstrate CBT’s effectiveness for depression, with lasting benefits that often continue after treatment ends.
Behavioral Activation (BA) — A depression-specific therapy that addresses the withdrawal-and-isolation cycle that worsens depressive symptoms. BA works by gradually reintroducing meaningful, rewarding activities into daily life. Research shows BA can be as effective as CBT for many people with depression — and is often easier to engage with when motivation is at its lowest.
Interpersonal Therapy (IPT) — Focuses on the connection between depressive symptoms and current relationship patterns, life transitions, grief, or interpersonal conflicts. Particularly effective when depression is tied to relational stress or a major life change.
Psychiatric Medication Management — For clients with moderate-to-severe depression, treatment-resistant depression, or co-occurring conditions, medication (SSRIs, SNRIs, atypical antidepressants) can be a valuable complement to therapy. Asana Recovery’s psychiatric prescribers are integrated into the clinical team and work in coordination with your primary therapist.
Group Therapy for Depression — Reduces isolation, provides peer validation, and creates opportunities to practice new behavioral patterns. Particularly powerful for clients whose depression involves social withdrawal.
If your depression has led to alcohol or substance use as a coping mechanism, you’re not alone — and you’re not stuck in that cycle. According to SAMHSA, nearly one-third of people with depression also have a co-occurring substance use disorder. Asana Recovery’s depression and alcohol dual diagnosis program treats both conditions together by the same clinical team, in the same treatment plan, at the same time — because treating one without the other rarely leads to lasting recovery.

Major depressive disorder causes persistent sadness, loss of interest, and can significantly impair daily functioning. Our structured programs provide intensive support when weekly therapy isn’t enough.

Also called dysthymia, this chronic form of depression lasts two years or more. Our programs address long-standing patterns and build sustainable coping strategies.

When you’re struggling with depression, bipolar disorder, or other mood conditions, choosing the right treatment center matters. Here’s what sets Asana Recovery apart:
Many people with mood disorders turn to alcohol or drugs to cope with their symptoms. According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), nearly one-third of people with depression also have a substance use disorder.
This creates a dangerous cycle: substances may temporarily mask symptoms but ultimately worsen mood instability, which leads to more substance use. Breaking this cycle requires treating both conditions together.
At Asana Recovery, we specialize in integrated dual diagnosis treatment—addressing mood disorders and substance use disorders simultaneously by the same clinical team, in the same treatment plan, for better long-term outcomes. If you’re struggling with both, you don’t have to choose which to treat first. Explore our specialized depression and alcohol program for clients whose depression and substance use have become intertwined.

Treatment length varies based on individual needs and severity. Most patients participate in PHP for 2-4 weeks before transitioning to IOP for an additional 4-8 weeks. Your treatment team will regularly assess progress and adjust the plan. Some people benefit from longer-term support, while others respond quickly to intensive treatment.
Not necessarily. Many clients with mild-to-moderate depression overcome it with therapy alone — CBT, Behavioral Activation, and IPT are highly effective without medication. For clients with severe or treatment-resistant depression, bipolar disorder (where medication is typically essential), or co-occurring conditions, psychiatric medication can be a valuable complement to therapy. Asana Recovery’s psychiatric prescribers are integrated into the clinical team and work in close coordination with your primary therapist.
Yes, many clients maintain employment during treatment. Our IOP offers flexible morning and evening sessions, and our Virtual IOP can be accessed from anywhere in California via secure video. If you need more intensive PHP treatment initially, we can help you plan for a temporary leave under FMLA when needed — and we coordinate directly with HR or EAP teams to support that transition.
Sadness is a normal human emotion that typically passes within days and has a clear cause. Depression is a clinical condition involving persistent low mood lasting two weeks or more, accompanied by other symptoms like sleep changes, fatigue, and difficulty functioning. If sadness doesn’t improve or significantly impacts your daily life, it may be depression.

We firmly believe that the internet should be available and accessible to anyone, and are committed to providing a website that is accessible to the widest possible audience, regardless of circumstance and ability.
To fulfill this, we aim to adhere as strictly as possible to the World Wide Web Consortium’s (W3C) Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.1 (WCAG 2.1) at the AA level. These guidelines explain how to make web content accessible to people with a wide array of disabilities. Complying with those guidelines helps us ensure that the website is accessible to all people: blind people, people with motor impairments, visual impairment, cognitive disabilities, and more.
This website utilizes various technologies that are meant to make it as accessible as possible at all times. We utilize an accessibility interface that allows persons with specific disabilities to adjust the website’s UI (user interface) and design it to their personal needs.
Additionally, the website utilizes an AI-based application that runs in the background and optimizes its accessibility level constantly. This application remediates the website’s HTML, adapts Its functionality and behavior for screen-readers used by the blind users, and for keyboard functions used by individuals with motor impairments.
If you’ve found a malfunction or have ideas for improvement, we’ll be happy to hear from you. You can reach out to the website’s operators by using the following email
Our website implements the ARIA attributes (Accessible Rich Internet Applications) technique, alongside various different behavioral changes, to ensure blind users visiting with screen-readers are able to read, comprehend, and enjoy the website’s functions. As soon as a user with a screen-reader enters your site, they immediately receive a prompt to enter the Screen-Reader Profile so they can browse and operate your site effectively. Here’s how our website covers some of the most important screen-reader requirements, alongside console screenshots of code examples:
Screen-reader optimization: we run a background process that learns the website’s components from top to bottom, to ensure ongoing compliance even when updating the website. In this process, we provide screen-readers with meaningful data using the ARIA set of attributes. For example, we provide accurate form labels; descriptions for actionable icons (social media icons, search icons, cart icons, etc.); validation guidance for form inputs; element roles such as buttons, menus, modal dialogues (popups), and others. Additionally, the background process scans all the website’s images and provides an accurate and meaningful image-object-recognition-based description as an ALT (alternate text) tag for images that are not described. It will also extract texts that are embedded within the image, using an OCR (optical character recognition) technology. To turn on screen-reader adjustments at any time, users need only to press the Alt+1 keyboard combination. Screen-reader users also get automatic announcements to turn the Screen-reader mode on as soon as they enter the website.
These adjustments are compatible with all popular screen readers, including JAWS and NVDA.
Keyboard navigation optimization: The background process also adjusts the website’s HTML, and adds various behaviors using JavaScript code to make the website operable by the keyboard. This includes the ability to navigate the website using the Tab and Shift+Tab keys, operate dropdowns with the arrow keys, close them with Esc, trigger buttons and links using the Enter key, navigate between radio and checkbox elements using the arrow keys, and fill them in with the Spacebar or Enter key.Additionally, keyboard users will find quick-navigation and content-skip menus, available at any time by clicking Alt+1, or as the first elements of the site while navigating with the keyboard. The background process also handles triggered popups by moving the keyboard focus towards them as soon as they appear, and not allow the focus drift outside it.
Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.
We aim to support the widest array of browsers and assistive technologies as possible, so our users can choose the best fitting tools for them, with as few limitations as possible. Therefore, we have worked very hard to be able to support all major systems that comprise over 95% of the user market share including Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Apple Safari, Opera and Microsoft Edge, JAWS and NVDA (screen readers).
Despite our very best efforts to allow anybody to adjust the website to their needs. There may still be pages or sections that are not fully accessible, are in the process of becoming accessible, or are lacking an adequate technological solution to make them accessible. Still, we are continually improving our accessibility, adding, updating and improving its options and features, and developing and adopting new technologies. All this is meant to reach the optimal level of accessibility, following technological advancements. For any assistance, please reach out to
