With all the movies about drug addiction that Hollywood has produced, you have to wonder why studios haven’t created an equally large number of films that solely focus on detox and withdrawal. In most movies, characters struggle with forms of addiction for comedic and/or dramatic purposes, but we rarely see the withdrawal process until the end of the film, if it’s even included at all. So, for today, let’s take a closer look at some movies that focus on this delicate and dangerous process of drug withdrawal.

Clean and Sober (1988)

Here is a film that focuses on the average man-turned-addict. Starring Michael Keaton, this comedy focuses on the misadventures of a rich real estate broker who suffers from drug addiction. At one point in the film, after witnessing a female associate die of an overdose, he realizes he needs to check into a program and eventually battles his attachment to cocaine. If anything, Clean and Sober shows us how hard it can be for a person to admit he has a problem and take the appropriate action to save his life.

The Basketball Diaries (1995)

Featuring a young Leonardo DiCaprio, this iconic movie, based on the cult classic novel by Jim Carroll, focuses on a group of friends and basketball stars at a Catholic high school. At one point, they are taken off the team after officials discover they are consuming drugs, an action that eventually drives protagonist Jim into using heroin. Although we aren’t exposed to the recovery process, we do witness a healthy Jim fully withdrawn from heroin at the film’s climax.

Trainspotting (1996)

Only one year after Basketball Diaries, audiences were introduced to the British classic Trainspotting, which helped launch Ewan McGregor’s career. Besides introducing audiences to the brutal realities of heroin addiction, though, Trainspotting also showcases the grim, frightening realities of detoxing from drugs at home. In one of the most heart-pounding scenes, protagonist Renton decides he’s had enough and detoxes from heroin in his room. While not focusing on successful treatment, Trainspotting showcases the hardships of detox, overall.
