If drugs didn’t make an appearance in a few Hollywood films, people would probably think there was something wrong with directors. After all, thanks to the portrayal of nasty substances like heroin and meth, audiences have witnessed some incredible acting and screenwriting from some amazing talents around the world. Take Trainspotting (1996) and Requiem for a Dream (2000) as examples. However, particularly during the 1970s and 80s, Hollywood tended to drift closer to the jungles of Peruvian marching powder, just to see how long they had to walk the white line. Let’s take a closer look at movies that focus on the dangers of cocaine.
Scarface (1983)
We couldn’t start off this list without talking about one of the most infamous and beloved mobster films of all time. Set in Florida during Mariel exodus of 1980, Scarface tells the story of Cuban migrant Tony Montana (Al Pacino), who dreams of creating a better life for himself and inevitably becomes one of the most notorious cocaine drug lords of the Sunshine State. Once he’s crowned king, though, Tony becomes the target of rivals and eventually develops a severe addiction to his precious white powder.
American Made (2017)
One of the more recent cocaine-centered films on this list, American Made is based on the real-life story of a TWA pilot-turned-drug smuggler who transports planeloads of cocaine across South America. In 1978, Barry Seal (Tom Cruise) garners the attention of the Medellín Cartel, headed by infamous drug lord Pablo Escobar, and eventually works as a drug and weapons smuggler for years. After being exposed, Seal works as a snitch for the CIA to turn in the cartel members.
Cocaine Godmother (2017)
Another newbie among drug films, this is another biopic that focuses on an infamous cocaine drug lord, only this time the story takes a different turn: this time, the drug lord is a woman. After reaching 17 years of age, Griselda Bianco eventually traveled to the United States where, in New York City, she made connections with drug runners in the area. In Cocaine Godmother, audiences are exposed to the despicable activities conducted in Bianco’s drug trade, ranging from prostitution to cocaine use.
