Nowadays, drug films no longer fall into independent categories and are now commended by international audiences, who often praise these movies for capturing the dramatic or humorous aspects of addiction. From comedies like The Hangover (2009) to grisly dramas like Midnight Express (1978), these films take different approaches but also teach one valuable lesson: drugs are painful and drawn-out vices of our world. However, which movies told the story in the most realistic way? Which ones taught the most valuable lessons? Here is a closer look at movies that nailed the pain of addiction.

Trainspotting ((1996)

Needless to say, a list of the greatest drug films would never be complete without the addition of this disturbing yet informative story. Ewan McGregor stars as Renton, a Scottish heroin addict who battles his sickness alongside a group of his best friends and fellow addicts. Many parts of this flick are unnerving, but one of the most infamous is the terrifying “withdrawal” scene. After making the decision to detox from heroin at home without any medical supervision, Renton suffers an experience that can only be described as torture. Trainspotting is a calling card for detox and a brutal warning to anyone who is curious about drug use.

Being Charlie (2015)

Taking a bit of a different turn, Being Charlie focuses on the struggles of a teenager as he endures recovery and a subsequent relapse. After undergoing six months of healing at a residential facility, Charlie (played by Nick Robinson) ultimately seeks out more drugs after being discharged, only to find his father and an intervention party waiting for him in Los Angeles. During the rest of the film, Charlie experiences a different type of recovery in a halfway house, but he enters that degrading cesspool of addiction once more. If anything, Being Charlie showcases how critical an addicts’ recovery can be and how the risk of relapse is always imminent.
