OCD & ADHD Treatment in Orange County

Living with OCD or ADHD means your brain works differently — but different doesn’t mean broken. Asana Recovery’s outpatient OCD and ADHD treatment in Orange County uses Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) — the gold-standard treatment for OCD endorsed by the International OCD Foundation — alongside executive function coaching, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and Habit Reversal Training for behavioral conditions. Treatment is available across PHP, IOP, Virtual IOP, and Standard Outpatient levels of care — with integrated dual diagnosis support for clients whose OCD or ADHD co-occurs with substance use.

OCD & ADHD Conditions We Treat

Understanding Neurodivergent Conditions

Neurodivergent conditions like OCD and ADHD involve differences in brain function that affect how you think, focus, and respond to the world around you. These aren’t character flaws or lack of willpower—they’re neurological conditions with effective treatments.

According to the National Institute of Mental Health, OCD affects approximately 1.2% of U.S. adults, while ADHD affects about 4.4% of the adult population. Both conditions often go undiagnosed or misdiagnosed for years, leading to unnecessary suffering and functional impairment.

At Asana Recovery, we provide specialized treatment for OCD, ADHD, and related behavioral conditions through our Orange County outpatient programs — Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP), Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), Virtual IOP for California residents, and Standard Outpatient. Each level offers the intensive, structured clinical support these conditions often require, with daily practice opportunities that traditional weekly therapy simply can’t match. The same clinical team supports clients across every level of care, building continuity that’s especially valuable for OCD treatment, where progress depends on consistent ERP exposure work.

Conditions We Treat

Our clinical team provides specialized treatment for the full spectrum of behavioral and neurodivergent conditions. While OCD and ADHD are distinct conditions requiring different treatment approaches, both benefit from intensive, structured outpatient care.

Obsessive-Compulsive DisorderOCD

  • Intrusive, unwanted thoughts (obsessions)
  • Repetitive behaviors or mental acts (compulsions)
  • Significant anxiety and distress
  • Time-consuming rituals (1+ hours/day)
  • Often hidden due to shame
  • Not about being “neat” or organized

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity DisorderADHD

  • Difficulty sustaining attention
  • Executive function challenges
  • Impulsivity or hyperactivity
  • Time blindness and procrastination
  • Emotional dysregulation
  • Not about intelligence or effort

OCD Treatment

OCD involves intrusive thoughts (obsessions) and repetitive behaviors or mental acts (compulsions) that consume significant time and cause real distress. Common OCD subtypes include contamination/cleaning, checking, symmetry/ordering, intrusive thoughts (often disturbing thoughts about harm, religion, or sexuality), and “just right” feelings. Our ERP-based treatment — the gold-standard evidence-based approach — helps you break free from the OCD cycle without relying on rituals or reassurance.

Adult ADHD Treatment

ADHD doesn’t disappear in adulthood—it just looks different. We help adults develop executive function skills, emotional regulation strategies, and systems that work with their ADHD brain.

Impulse Control Disorders

Difficulty resisting urges that may be harmful—including intermittent explosive disorder, kleptomania, and other impulse control challenges. We use CBT and behavioral strategies to build self-regulation.

Body-Focused Repetitive Behaviors

Including trichotillomania (hair pulling), excoriation (skin picking), and nail biting. These conditions respond well to Habit Reversal Training and specialized behavioral interventions.

Signs of OCD That Require Treatment

OCD is often misunderstood. It’s not about being “neat” or “particular”—it’s a condition that causes genuine suffering. Consider seeking treatment if you experience:

  • Intrusive thoughts that are distressing, unwanted, and hard to dismiss (about harm, contamination, sexuality, religion, or “just right” feelings)
  • Compulsive behaviors you feel driven to perform to reduce anxiety (checking, washing, counting, arranging, mental rituals)
  • Avoidance of situations, places, or people that trigger obsessions
  • Time consumption—obsessions and compulsions take more than 1 hour per day
  • Significant distress or impairment in work, relationships, or daily functioning
  • Reassurance-seeking—repeatedly asking others if things are “okay” or safe

Signs of Adult ADHD That Require Treatment

Many adults with ADHD don’t realize they have it—they’ve spent years thinking they’re “lazy,” “unmotivated,” or “not living up to their potential.” Common signs include:

  • Chronic disorganization despite repeated attempts to create systems
  • Difficulty starting or completing tasks, especially boring or complex ones
  • Time blindness—consistently underestimating how long things take, running late
  • Hyperfocus on interesting tasks while neglecting important responsibilities
  • Emotional reactivity—intense emotions that come on quickly and feel overwhelming
  • Relationship difficulties due to forgetting commitments, interrupting, or seeming not to listen
  • Underperformance—knowing you’re capable of more but unable to consistently deliver

Important: OCD and ADHD Often Co-Occur

Research shows that up to 30% of people with OCD also have ADHD, and the combination presents unique treatment challenges. Our clinicians are experienced in treating both conditions, whether separately or together.

How We Treat OCD

Effective OCD treatment requires specialized approaches — standard talk therapy is not only ineffective for OCD but can actually make it worse by providing the reassurance OCD craves. Asana Recovery’s OCD program uses the gold-standard evidence-based treatment: Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP). Our ERP-trained clinicians deliver this therapy across all four outpatient levels of care, with the daily practice opportunities ERP requires to actually reshape the OCD cycle.

Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) Gold Standard for OCD

ERP is the most effective treatment for OCD, with research showing 70%+ of patients experience significant improvement. Endorsed by the International OCD Foundation, ERP works by gradually exposing you to triggers while preventing compulsive responses, proving to your brain that the anxiety will pass on its own.

  1. Psychoeducation – Understand OCD cycle
  2. Hierarchy – Build exposure ladder
  3. Exposure – Gradual, guided practice
  4. Response Prevention – Resist compulsions

Additional OCD Treatment Approaches

Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT)

Complements ERP by helping you accept intrusive thoughts without fighting them, while taking action aligned with your values despite discomfort
.

Inference-Based CBT (I-CBT)

A newer approach that targets the reasoning process behind obsessions, helping you recognize when your brain is making inferential leaps not supported by reality.

How We Treat ADHD

ADHD treatment isn’t about “fixing” you—it’s about understanding how your brain works and building strategies, skills, and systems that leverage your strengths while managing challenges.

Comprehensive ADHD Support Multimodal Approach

Effective ADHD treatment addresses multiple life domains. According to CHADD (Children and Adults with ADHD), the most effective approach combines skill-building, behavioral strategies, and when appropriate, medication management.

  1. Executive Function – Planning, organizing, prioritizing, time management
  2. Cognitive Strategies – CBT for negative self-talk and shame
  3. Emotional Regulation – Managing intensity and reactivity
  4. Relationships – Communication and social skills
  5. Motivation Systems – Working with dopamine, not against it
  6. External Structures – Systems, routines, accountability

ADHD Treatment Components

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

Addresses the negative thought patterns, shame, and low self-esteem that often accompany years of living with unmanaged ADHD.

Executive Function Coaching

Practical skill-building for planning, organization, time management, and task completion—tailored to how the ADHD brain actually works.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)

Teaches emotional regulation and distress tolerance—crucial skills for managing ADHD’s emotional intensity.

Group Therapy

Connect with others who understand ADHD challenges. Reduces shame, provides accountability, and offers peer support.

Program Options for ADHD Treatment

  • 5 days per week, 5-6 hours daily
  • Daily ERP exposure practice for OCD
  • Executive function coaching for ADHD
  • Same clinical team across program levels
  • Ideal for severe OCD, significant ADHD impairment, or treatment-resistant cases

Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

  • 3 hours per session, 3 days per week

  • Continued ERP work for OCD
  • ADHD skill implementation in real-world settings
  • Ideal for moderate OCD/ADHD or PHP step-down

Our Virtual IOP delivers the same specialized OCD and ADHD treatment from anywhere in California via secure video sessions — ideal for clients who can’t attend in person, who find remote sessions reduce anxiety, or who live outside Orange County.

The Connection to Substance Use

Both OCD and ADHD are associated with elevated rates of substance use disorders. According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), adults with ADHD are significantly more likely to develop alcohol or drug problems—often as a way to self-medicate symptoms.

Similarly, people with OCD may turn to substances to temporarily escape the anxiety caused by obsessions or to numb distressing thoughts. Unfortunately, substance use ultimately worsens both conditions.

At Asana Recovery, we specialize in co-occurring disorders. If you’re struggling with OCD or ADHD alongside substance use, our integrated approach treats both conditions together for better outcomes.

"Understanding that my brain works differently—not worse, just differently—was the first step to actually managing my ADHD instead of constantly fighting against myself."

Frequently Asked Questions

Most people see significant improvement within 12-16 weeks of consistent ERP treatment. However, OCD is often a chronic condition that benefits from ongoing maintenance strategies. The intensive nature of our PHP/IOP programs can accelerate progress compared to weekly therapy.

It depends. For OCD, ERP therapy is highly effective on its own for many people, though SSRIs can be a helpful addition for some. For ADHD, medication is often beneficial but not required—our program focuses on behavioral strategies and skill-building that work with or without medication.

We understand the concern—the idea of facing your fears is intimidating. But ERP is done gradually, at your pace, with support. You’ll never be forced into exposures you’re not ready for. Most patients find that ERP is challenging but not traumatizing, and the relief of breaking free from OCD makes it worthwhile.

Absolutely. Many adults—especially women, people with primarily inattentive type, and those with high intelligence—weren’t identified as children. If you’ve struggled with focus, organization, and follow-through your whole life, adult ADHD evaluation may be appropriate.

Yes, many clients maintain employment during treatment. Our IOP offers flexible morning and evening sessions, and our Virtual IOP can be accessed from anywhere in California via secure video. The structured nature of our outpatient programs can actually help ADHD clients improve work performance by building better systems and routines. For clients in PHP who need more intensive initial treatment, we can help plan a temporary leave under FMLA when appropriate.

Yes. Most major PPO insurance plans cover outpatient mental health treatment for OCD and ADHD, including Asana Recovery’s PHP and IOP programs — this is a federal requirement under the Mental Health Parity Act and the Affordable Care Act. Asana Recovery is in-network with Anthem Blue Cross, Aetna, Cigna, ComPsych, TriCare, and Tri-West. Most other PPO plans are accepted on an out-of-network basis.
