To say that Scotland has a bit of a drinking problem would be an understatement, and, ironically, residents of this small country would heartily agree. According to a recent report from the Shetland Times, public officials have been conversing about the major problems surrounding Shetland’s drinking culture, which has apparently been steadily spiraling out of control over the past couple of years. Let’s just say the problem adds up to millions of pounds in losses. Let’s take a closer look at how residents of these Scottish islands are dealing with the severity of alcohol culture.

Four-Year Improvement Plan

Back in 2016, the Shetland Islands Council, NHS, and Shetland Charitable Trust have focused on the severity of Shetland’s alcohol culture. “How bad is this drinking problem?” you may ask. According to the Shetland four-year local outcome improvement plan (LOIP), residents’ love of alcoholic drinks has cost the island government a staggering £6.8 to £10.8 million per year, overshadowing costs for crime and social care.

On that note, researchers have also confirmed that Shetland has been burdened by a £3.9 million accumulation, all stemming from problems with productive capacity; for example, work absences or premature death.

Alcohol Is Death’s Doorknob

Additionally, the LOIP report confirms that alcohol has been a factor in a variety of tragic events, like suicide, premature deaths, and mental health problems overall. In many cases, people have consumed excessive quantities of alcohol prior to dying or had already been suffering from problem drinking prior to dying.

However, Elizabeth Robinson, health improvement manager for the NHS, explains that her team is trying to promote quality over quantity. Rather than purposefully drinking too much alcohol just to become intoxicated, people in Shetland should make an effort to treat alcohol with respect.

Seeking Treatment for Alcohol Abuse or Alcoholism

Alcohol withdrawal can easily be one of the most frightening aspects of healing. During the course of the recovery process, you will suffer from minor to severe symptoms that may include night sweats, hallucinations, fevers, anxiety, and sadness, but always remember that you can find the strength to overcome these problems. However, you must always seek medical attention when you have decided to cut ties with alcohol, as the withdrawal process can be notoriously dangerous. Never attempt to do this without the supervision of a trained specialist.

If you are suffering from a severe case of alcoholism or alcohol abuse, or have a friend or loved one who is coping with this illness, get in touch with Asana Recovery today. Our professional team of counselors and healthcare experts will help you endure the painful process of alcohol withdrawal and detox and guide you along the rocky road of rehabilitation. Soon enough, you will experience a faster and much more efficient recovery.

If you want to find out more about our residential treatment or supervised detoxification/withdrawal programs or enroll in one of these programs today, we are ready and waiting to speak with you at your leisure and your disclosure.
