SUBSTANCE ABUSE IN THE LEGAL PROFESSION
- May 21, 2018
Substance addiction is a disease that knows no socio-economic status. Anyone can suffer from substance addiction, and the pressures imposed on those in the legal profession create a fertile environment for substance use and abuse to run rampant. In fact, high rates of substance use and abuse in the legal profession have been studied and reported upon for decades, with a 1990 study finding that lawyers struggle with alcohol use and abuse problems at nearly double the rate of the general population.
In a 2016 study, more than one in five lawyers reported that they believed their use of drugs or alcohol had been problematic at some point during their career, and three out of four lawyers reported that these problems did not start until after entering law school.
Other research revealed that lawyers report problematic alcohol usage at more than twice the rate of surgeons, and female attorneys have been found to suffer from alcohol problems far more frequently than the female population at large.
It is important to remember that addiction is a progressive disease. If you think that you or someone you love may be struggling with substance addiction, do not hesitate to seek professional help or counseling.
