Drug and alcohol abuse is pervasive in the restaurant industry. According to the New York Times, food service workers have the highest rate of illicit drug use and the third highest rate of alcohol abuse among popular occupations. The prevalence of substance abuse in the restaurant industry can in large part be explained by the setting. The late-night shifts, abundance of alcohol, accessibility of drugs, and a progressive social culture create an environment ripe to allow substance addiction to flourish.
