At Asana Recovery, our outpatient treatment is built around the clinical reality of benzodiazepine use disorder — including the medical detox phase, the unique role of tapering, and the underlying anxiety conditions that often drove benzo use in the first place.
Asana Recovery is an outpatient facility. We don’t provide medical detox directly. For benzo withdrawal — which can include life-threatening seizures — we coordinate medically supervised detox through our trusted partner network. Their medical teams use evidence-based tapering protocols (gradually reducing the medication rather than stopping abruptly) to keep you safe and minimize withdrawal severity.
Once you’re medically stable, you transition directly into our outpatient programs to begin the longer recovery work.
Benzodiazepines work by enhancing GABA, a calming neurotransmitter. With sustained use, the brain reduces its own GABA production. Stopping abruptly causes a dangerous rebound — the brain is left without enough calming chemistry, which is what triggers seizures, severe anxiety, and other withdrawal symptoms.
Tapering — gradually decreasing the dose over weeks or months — gives the brain time to restore its own GABA function safely. This is why benzo withdrawal is medically managed, not attempted at home.
Unlike alcohol or opioid use disorders, there is currently no FDA-approved medication specifically for treating benzodiazepine use disorder. Treatment after detox is built on evidence-based behavioral therapies and integrated mental health care.
