Sometimes, to get a wake-up call for the horrors of drug addiction, you just need to take a dip into the seas of science fiction and horror. Beyond the machine guns, fake (but still entertaining) CGI, and pointless action scenes, some of these films not only contribute much to the drama or story department, but they definitely hammer in some graphic visuals, too. In the 70s and 80s especially, drugs were prominent elements in science fiction films, but some make the message more obvious than others. For today, let’s take a closer look at an underappreciated and gritty crime-science fiction thriller and review the drug-infested world of I Come in Peace.
Tossing out the Rule Book
Set in Houston, Texas, I Come in Peace (originally titled Dark Angel) tells the story of police officer Jack Caine (Dolph Lundgren) as he battles a gang of white-collar drug dealers called the White Boys, who had previously murdered his partner. With his new partner Special Agent Larry Smith (Brian Benben), Caine discovers a lineup of victims who apparently died from horrific overdoses on heroin and subsequently suffered mysterious wounds. Later, the officers begin to realize that something inhuman is attacking people, and the drugs are connected in a bizarre way.
Not Your Average Drug Film
On the surface, I Come in Peace is by no means your average drug film. Nothing in this movie could ever happen (we won’t give away spoilers as to what these events are). However, the underlying message is definitely grounded in real life: fear of drugs. Despite supernatural connections, the practices of the white-collar drug dealers, who hide behind luxurious cars and hotels, mimic the problems with drugs afflicting members of high society. People from all walks of life are hurt by addictive substances, and, whether fact or fiction, this message will always hold meaning for anyone who has known an addict or suffered from addiction.
