Needless to say, if you are the kind of person who prefers a nearly silent vacation spot and enjoys the freshness of winter air year-round, you don’t need to look any further than Iceland’s northwestern cousin, Greenland. In fact, this is the last place you would expect to run into any social problems or drug-related issues. Off the top of your head, you would assume this lonely island, one of the largest and coldest on the planet, is a wintry wasteland with a few towns scattered here and there, but the fact of the matter is that alcohol is still a major problem here, too. As it turns out, though, this Nordic nation recently implemented a policy that could turn this alcohol issue upside down. Let’s take a closer look and find out some more information.

No More Advertising Here!

So how do you keep the people from drinking too much alcohol? According to the government of Greenland, just take away suggestive imagery. On November 20, 2018, the Greenlandic Parliament issued a ban on all forms of advertising for alcoholic beverages and have ordered that all booze will be separated from other goods in stores. Likewise, officials argued about changing the sale times for alcohol on Saturdays, a unique but welcoming notion.

We Have an Alcoholic Problem

During a meeting, Agathe Fontain, Minister of Health and Nordic Cooperation, confirmed that her concerns were rooted in police reports across the country. As she explains, the evidence of aggression, violence, sexual assault, and a string of other crimes stemming from alcohol abuse and drunkenness is laid out in plain sight each day. She has also pointed out the dangerous connection between booze and suicide, something for which Greenland has gained notoriety over the past decades. In essence, Mrs. Fontain emphasizes that her country has a major alcoholic problem.

The evidence speaks for itself.
