Treatment Modalities for Addiction & Mental Health in Orange County

At Asana Recovery, treatment modalities are the evidence-based clinical tools we use to help individuals heal from substance use disorders and co-occurring mental health conditions. Rather than applying a one-size-fits-all approach, our outpatient team in Orange County combines therapies based on each client’s history, diagnosis, severity, and recovery goals—building an individualized treatment plan that evolves as you progress through PHP, IOP, Virtual IOP, and Standard Outpatient care. Eleven evidence-based modalities, delivered by licensed California clinicians, integrated by the same clinical team across every level of care.

Our treatment modalities span behavioral therapy, trauma-focused care, medication-assisted treatment (MAT), psychiatric support, holistic practices, and family and couples therapy. Each modality is grounded in research, delivered by licensed clinicians, and integrated across our Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP), Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), Outpatient Program (OP), and Virtual IOP for clients across California.

Whether you’re stepping down from residential care, beginning treatment for the first time, or seeking support for a loved one, this page outlines the full continuum of therapies available at Asana Recovery — and how we match them to your needs.

How We Match Treatment Modalities to Each Client

Effective addiction treatment is rarely about a single therapy. The science of recovery shows that combining evidence-based modalities — and adjusting them as a person progresses — produces stronger outcomes than any one approach alone.

Our clinical process begins with a comprehensive biopsychosocial assessment led by our licensed therapists and overseen by our Clinical Director, Sheida Shavalian, LMFT. From that assessment, we build a personalized treatment plan that draws from the modalities described below. As clients move through PHP, IOP, OP, or Virtual IOP, the mix of therapies shifts to match clinical needs, recovery milestones, and life circumstances.

What this looks like in practice:

This integrated approach reflects what the National Institute on Drug Abuse calls best practice: treatment that is comprehensive, personalized, and responsive to the whole person — not just the substance.

Our Treatment Modalities at a Glance

The therapies below are organized into five clinical categories. Each links to a dedicated page where you can learn more about how the modality works, who it benefits, and how it’s delivered at Asana Recovery.

01

Behavioral Therapies

Behavioral therapies form the foundation of evidence-based addiction treatment. They help clients identify the thoughts, emotions, and patterns that drive substance use and develop healthier coping strategies that support long-term recovery.

CBT is one of the most extensively researched therapies for addiction and co-occurring mental health conditions. At Asana Recovery, our clinicians use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to help clients recognize negative thought patterns, challenge distorted beliefs, and build practical skills for managing cravings, stress, and relapse triggers. CBT is particularly effective for clients with depression, anxiety, and substance use disorders.

Originally developed by Dr. Marsha Linehan for borderline personality disorder, Dialectical Behavior Therapy is now a widely used modality in addiction recovery, eating disorder treatment, and trauma work. DBT focuses on four core skill areas: mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness. At Asana Recovery, our clinicians deliver comprehensive DBT — including all four skills modules through structured group sessions plus individual therapy — not just DBT-informed approaches. Clients struggling with self-destructive behaviors, intense emotions, or unstable relationships benefit significantly from this gold-standard treatment.

02

Trauma & Somatic Therapies

Unresolved trauma is one of the most common drivers of addiction. Many of our clients come to Asana Recovery carrying experiences — from childhood adversity to combat exposure to medical trauma — that fuel substance use. Our trauma-focused modalities address these wounds directly, in a way that talk therapy alone often cannot.

EMDR is the gold-standard PTSD treatment endorsed by the American Psychological Association, World Health Organization, and U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Originally developed for PTSD and now widely used in trauma-driven addiction treatment, our EMDR Therapy program in Orange County helps clients process traumatic memories without needing to verbally recount every detail — particularly valuable for clients who have repeatedly debriefed incidents but never fully processed them. Significant relief often comes in 6 to 12 sessions. EMDR is especially helpful for clients with PTSD, complex trauma, military or first responder trauma exposure, or trauma-driven substance use disorders.

Beyond EMDR, our clinicians integrate trauma-informed care across every program at Asana Recovery — built on the SAMHSA principles of safety, trustworthiness, choice, collaboration, and empowerment. This means we recognize the prevalence and impact of trauma, prioritize physical and emotional safety, pace treatment to your readiness, and avoid practices that risk re-traumatization. Trauma-focused therapy at Asana Recovery may include Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), Prolonged Exposure (PE), Trauma-Focused CBT, and somatic-informed work—integrated alongside addiction recovery skills when trauma and substance use co-occur.

03

Medical & Integrative Therapies

Recovery often involves more than therapy alone. Our medical and integrative modalities address the biological, neurological, and whole-person dimensions of addiction — helping clients stabilize, reduce cravings, and build sustainable wellness practices.

For clients with opioid use disorder, alcohol use disorder, or certain other substance use conditions, Medication-Assisted Treatment combines FDA-approved medications — such as buprenorphine (Suboxone), naltrexone, or acamprosate — with counseling and behavioral therapy. MAT reduces cravings, prevents withdrawal, and lowers overdose risk while clients build the psychological skills for long-term recovery.

Many clients arrive with co-occurring mental health conditions that benefit from medication. Our psychiatric care team provides evaluation, diagnosis, and ongoing medication management for depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, ADHD, PTSD, and other conditions. Psychiatric care is fully integrated with therapy, ensuring medication decisions are made in coordination with your full treatment team.

Recovery is more than the absence of substance use — it’s the rebuilding of a meaningful life. Our holistic therapy program complements clinical care with mindfulness practices and experiential therapies that support physical, emotional, and spiritual wellness. These approaches help clients reconnect with themselves, develop healthy coping strategies, and build the sustainable wellness practices that support long-term recovery.

04

Therapeutic Settings

The setting in which therapy is delivered matters as much as the modality itself. At Asana Recovery, every client engages in both individual and group work — two complementary settings that build different recovery skills.

Individual therapy provides a confidential, one-on-one space to explore the personal experiences, beliefs, and relationships that shape your recovery. Sessions are led by licensed therapists who tailor each meeting to your treatment plan, drawing from CBT, DBT, EMDR, or other modalities as clinically appropriate.

Group therapy is a cornerstone of addiction recovery. In facilitated peer groups, clients share experiences, practice new coping skills, and build the kind of supportive community that protects against isolation and relapse. Our groups range from process-oriented sessions to skills-based curricula on relapse prevention, emotion regulation, and life skills.

05

Relational & Family Therapies

Addiction affects relationships, and relationships affect recovery. Our family and couples programs help repair the connections damaged by substance use and build the relational support clients need for long-term success.

When families heal together, recovery is more durable. Our family therapy program helps loved ones understand the dynamics of addiction and co-occurring mental health conditions, repair communication, set healthy boundaries, and become active participants in the recovery process. Family sessions are available in-person at our Fountain Valley outpatient center and via secure telehealth for out-of-area family members.

For partners navigating recovery together, couples therapy addresses the unique relational challenges that addiction creates. Whether one or both partners are in active recovery, our clinicians use evidence-based approaches — including the Gottman Method principles and Behavioral Couples Therapy — to rebuild trust, improve communication, and create a partnership that supports sobriety. Asana Recovery’s dedicated couples treatment program provides flexible options including in-person and virtual sessions, with treatment plans designed around both partners’ clinical needs.

Treatment Modalities Across Our Outpatient Programs

Asana Recovery is an outpatient treatment center. Every modality on this page is delivered through one or more of our outpatient programs, with the intensity and structure tailored to each client’s needs.

The most structured outpatient option, typically 20–30 hours per week. PHP clients engage in daily group therapy, individual sessions, psychiatric care, and access to MAT when appropriate. Often the right starting point after detox or stepping down from residential care.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

There is no single “most effective” therapy for addiction. Research consistently shows that the best outcomes come from combining evidence-based modalities — typically cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), medication-assisted treatment (MAT) when appropriate, and group support — and adjusting them to each person’s clinical needs. At Asana Recovery, your treatment plan is personalized from your initial assessment and updated as you progress.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) focuses primarily on identifying and changing negative thought patterns that drive behavior. Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a specialized form of CBT that adds acceptance-based skills, focusing on mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness. CBT is often used for depression, anxiety, and substance use; DBT is especially helpful for clients with intense emotions, self-destructive behaviors, or borderline personality features.

The clinical modalities at Asana Recovery — CBT, DBT, EMDR, MAT, trauma-focused therapy, individual and group therapy, family and couples therapy, psychiatric care, aversion therapy, and adventure therapy—are all backed by published research and recommended by organizations including the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), SAMHSA, and the American Psychiatric Association. Holistic therapies are used to complement, not replace, evidence-based clinical care.

Your treatment plan will include the modalities that match your clinical needs, not all of them. After your initial assessment, your therapist and treatment team build a personalized plan that may evolve over time. For example, EMDR is often introduced once a client is stabilized, while MAT is reserved for specific substance use conditions where medication is clinically indicated.

Yes. Through our Virtual IOP, clients across California can access individual therapy, group therapy, CBT, DBT, family sessions, and psychiatric care via secure telehealth. Some modalities — such as EMDR and MAT — may require in-person sessions at our Fountain Valley outpatient center, depending on clinical considerations.

Most major insurance plans cover the evidence-based modalities offered at Asana Recovery, including CBT, DBT, group therapy, individual therapy, MAT, and psychiatric care. Coverage details vary by plan. Our admissions team can verify your specific benefits within minutes.
