Substance use disorder (SUD) develops when alcohol or drug use begins to override your ability to control it. What may start as occasional drinking, recreational drug use, or even legitimately prescribed medication can shift into patterns that affect work, relationships, health, and decision-making — often without the person fully recognizing the change.

Substance use often starts as a coping mechanism for something else — stress, anxiety, depression, trauma, chronic pain, or untreated mental health conditions. Over time, the substance use itself becomes the problem, layering on top of whatever it was originally trying to manage. Breaking that pattern usually requires treatment that addresses both the addiction AND the underlying drivers — which is why integrated dual diagnosis care is built into how Asana treats every client.

The most commonly treated substance use disorders include:

Recognizing Substance Use Disorder

Substance use disorder is often hidden — by the person experiencing it and by the people around them. Recognizing the signs is often the first step toward getting help. Common indicators include:

  • Tolerance — needing increasing amounts to achieve the same effect
  • Loss of control — using more, or for longer, than intended
  • Cravings — persistent thoughts about using when not actively using
  • Neglecting responsibilities — at work, school, home, or in relationships
  • Risky behavior — choices made under the influence that wouldn’t make sense sober
  • Strained relationships — with family, friends, partners, or colleagues
  • Withdrawal symptoms — physical or psychological symptoms when not using
  • Continued use despite consequences — knowing it’s causing harm but unable to stop

Recognizing yourself or a loved one in this list doesn’t mean treatment is the only path forward — but it does mean a free, confidential conversation with our admissions team could help clarify what level of care, if any, fits the situation. Call (949) 763-3440 or verify your insurance online.

Treatment Programs for Substance Abuse

Asana Recovery’s substance abuse treatment is built around outpatient care that fits real life — daily structured programming when you need it, flexible scheduling when you’re stable enough to maintain it. Every treatment plan starts with a comprehensive clinical assessment of your substance use history, mental health history, current symptoms, and personal goals. From there, our clinical team builds a personalized treatment plan combining evidence-based therapies (CBT, DBT, family therapy), medication-assisted treatment (MAT) when indicated, and integrated mental health care for the majority of clients who have co-occurring conditions. The result: substance abuse treatment that addresses your whole situation, not just the substance.

At Asana Recovery, we use a Comprehensive Healing Strategy:

Coordinated Medical Detox

If you are struggling with drugs or alcohol right now, that addiction is life-threatening. Detox helps you get clean and safe. You can do this two ways: a social approach, where you quit and move through withdrawal, or a medication assisted treatment program. Our team coordinates medically supervised detox through trusted partner facilities. We pick the right approach based on the substance, how much you use, and your health. Detox happens at a partner facility, where you are monitored and cared for as you move through withdrawal safely. Then you move straight into our outpatient programs.

In addition, if you’re addicted to a benzodiazepine, you may be asked to go onto a tapering schedule. This can significantly extend the detox period, because you will sometimes spend several weeks on detox instead of the standard 7-14 days.

Coordinated Residential Care

Some clients need a higher level of care before outpatient treatment. For them, our team coordinates residential placement through trusted partners in Orange County. These programs offer small, structured settings with personalized care. They treat addiction and mental health together, using proven therapies plus holistic healing. Once residential care is done, clients move smoothly into our outpatient programs. There, our team uses CBT, DBT, group therapy, and family therapy. We add holistic options like art therapy, yoga, and mindfulness. Our whole-person approach helps you build recovery skills while getting close support from our team.

Research shows that about half of people with substance use disorders also have a mental health condition. This high overlap calls for an integrated approach, since each condition affects the other. When mental health goes untreated, substance abuse often gets worse. And substance use can worsen mental health. Many people start using to self-medicate depression, anxiety, or trauma. Yet studies show only 8.3 percent of adults with both conditions get integrated care. The best approach is to treat both at once, with the same clinical team. This leads to better outcomes, fewer relapses, and stronger long-term recovery.

Taking care of your physical health and nutrition during treatment is key to recovery. Poor nutrition and health problems can lead people to drop out and raise relapse risk. Better physical health does the opposite. It boosts motivation and quality of life during treatment.

Substance use often leads to poor nutrition, damaged organs, weak immunity, and bad eating habits. These problems harm both body and mind. They affect vital organs and the nervous system. Different substances do different damage. Opioids affect digestion. Stimulants reduce appetite. Alcohol can cause severe nutrient loss.

Treatment at Asana Recovery includes a nutrition check, balanced meals, and health monitoring. This supports healing and helps you stay in recovery for the long term.

Outpatient Treatment

A mental health condition usually means you need long-term care to stay in recovery. We believe you should always have someone to talk to when things get hard. You will have bad days. You may be more open to relapse. So you need ongoing mental health care and counseling. We help with all of this, including support groups in your area. Every part of dual diagnosis treatment must fit your specific needs, both when you start and as you progress. We take that seriously.

Partial Hospitalization (PHP)

A Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) is an intensive outpatient option. It bridges the gap between inpatient and standard outpatient care. PHP usually runs 5 to 7 days a week, with sessions of 4 to 6 hours a day. That is at least 20 hours of treatment each week. During PHP, you get individual therapy, group therapy, medication management, and psychiatric care, while going home each evening. This lets you keep up with daily life while you get strong support. PHP fits people who finished inpatient care, need more than standard outpatient, or have a stable home but need intensive care.

Intensive Outpatient (IOP)

Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is a structured treatment option. It bridges the gap between inpatient and standard outpatient care. IOP usually offers 9 to 19 hours of treatment a week. It lets you keep up with work, school, or family. You get care through several methods, including individual counseling, group therapy, family therapy, and education sessions. IOP treats substance use, mental health, or both, for people who do not need 24-hour care or medical detox.

Frequently Asked Questions About Substance Abuse Treatment

What is the difference between substance abuse and substance use disorder?

“Substance abuse” is the older colloquial term; “substance use disorder” (SUD) is the current clinical term used in the DSM-5. SUD is diagnosed based on 11 specific criteria including loss of control, cravings, tolerance, withdrawal, and continued use despite consequences. The severity of SUD is classified as mild (2-3 criteria), moderate (4-5 criteria), or severe (6 or more). At Asana Recovery, our admissions team can help you understand where you fall on the spectrum during a free, confidential assessment.

What substances does Asana Recovery treat?

Asana Recovery’s outpatient programs treat a comprehensive range of substance use disorders including alcohol, opioids (heroin, fentanyl, prescription painkillers), stimulants (cocaine, methamphetamine), benzodiazepines (Xanax, Klonopin, Ativan, Valium), prescription medications, and cannabis. We also treat polysubstance use (multiple substances combined) and co-occurring substance use with mental health conditions. If your specific substance isn’t listed, our admissions team can confirm whether Asana is the right fit during a free consultation.

Does insurance cover substance abuse treatment?

Most major PPO insurance plans cover substance use disorder treatment as part of mental health and substance use disorder benefits — this is a federal requirement under the Mental Health Parity Act and the Affordable Care Act. Asana Recovery is in-network with Anthem Blue Cross, Aetna, Cigna, ComPsych, TriCare, and Tri-West. Most other PPO plans are accepted on an out-of-network basis. We provide a free, confidential benefits check — usually within the hour. Call (949) 763-3440 or verify your insurance online.

Do I need medical detox before starting outpatient treatment?

It depends on your substance, how much you’re using, your medical condition, and your mental health status. Withdrawal from alcohol, benzodiazepines, and opioids can be medically serious and typically requires monitored detox. Withdrawal from stimulants like cocaine or methamphetamine is uncomfortable but usually doesn’t require medical supervision. Asana Recovery coordinates medical detox through trusted partner facilities when needed — you’ll be medically monitored through withdrawal safely, then transition directly into our outpatient program once you’re stable. Our admissions team can clarify whether detox is recommended for your situation during the initial assessment.

What’s the difference between PHP, IOP, and outpatient treatment?

PHP (Partial Hospitalization Program) is the most intensive outpatient level — five days a week, 5 to 6 hours daily. IOP (Intensive Outpatient Program) is the mid-intensity level — three days a week, three hours per session. Virtual IOP delivers IOP via secure video for California residents. Standard outpatient continues the work with fewer weekly sessions as you build long-term stability. Most clients progress through these levels as a structured step-down, with the same clinical team across each level.

How long does outpatient substance abuse treatment last?

Treatment length varies based on your specific substance, severity of use, co-occurring conditions, and progress in recovery. Typical timelines: PHP — 4 to 6 weeks; IOP — 9 to 12 weeks; ongoing outpatient and aftercare — 6 to 12+ months. Many clients find that longer engagement with treatment correlates with stronger long-term recovery outcomes. Your clinical team will adjust the treatment plan based on how you’re progressing rather than following a fixed timeline.

What is medication-assisted treatment (MAT) and is it right for me?

Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) combines FDA-approved medications with therapy and counseling to treat opioid and alcohol use disorders. For opioid use disorder, Asana uses Suboxone, Sublocade, and Vivitrol. For alcohol use disorder, Asana uses naltrexone and acamprosate. MAT is evidence-based and significantly reduces relapse risk for opioid and alcohol use disorders — but it’s not appropriate for every substance or every client. Our medical team will discuss whether MAT fits your specific situation during the clinical assessment.

What if I have a mental health condition alongside substance abuse?

Roughly half of people with substance use disorders also have a co-occurring mental health condition like depression, anxiety, PTSD, bipolar disorder, OCD, or ADHD. This is called dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorders. At Asana Recovery, integrated dual diagnosis treatment is built into our standard model — both conditions are treated by the same clinical team, in the same treatment plan, at the same time. Treating only one condition while ignoring the other rarely leads to lasting recovery, so integrated care is the standard for most clients.
