Despite recent reports suggesting drops in heroin use, the Opioid Crisis does not seem to be disappearing from the United States anytime soon. Sadly, this is due largely in part to incessant prescriptions of the drugs to patients suffering from debilitating pain and the number of street drugs being shipped into our country by smugglers and gangs. However, there is good news on the horizon. In a recent press release, the DEA has announced that the United States government is planning to crack down on one of the most infamous Mexican cartels responsible for direct contributions to the Opioid Crisis. Let’s take a closer look at how our country is going to target this criminal group.

Cartel Jalisco Nueva Generacion

On October 16, 2018, the United States Government (through the aid of its Departments of Justice, Treasury, and State) announced its plan to target and destroy the infamous Cartel Jalisco Nueva Generacion (CJNG), one of the deadliest and aggressive drug cartels in Mexico. Overall, CJNG is also one of five of the most dangerous transaction-related criminal groups in the world. Why are they particularly dangerous? Consider the fact that they are solely responsible for shipping hundreds of tons of drugs including meth, heroin (laced with fentanyl), and cocaine into the United States of America. Meanwhile, gang members are inflicting irreparable damage and brutal violence on innocent Mexicans. In short, they need to be stopped.

The Brutal Reality of CJNG

DEA Administrator Dhillon has expressed great enthusiasm in helping the government. Over the years, DEA agents have helped government officials and international partners target the CJNG and destroy its assets. For over three years, agents have stressed that Mexican drug cartels are solely responsible for feeding deadly drugs into our country, ultimately fanning the flames of the Opioid Epidemic. As of October 12, Administrator Dhillon has charged CJNG leaders with 15 indictments and plans to detain them as quickly as possible.

As a conclusion, Dhillon emphasized the importance of upholding security and following the orders of President Trump to combat this threat.
