What to Bring to Your First Day at Asana Recovery
Starting outpatient treatment can feel like a big step. Knowing what to bring — and what to leave at home — makes your first day smoother. This guide is for clients beginning treatment in our Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP), Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), Virtual IOP, or Standard Outpatient at our Fountain Valley, Orange County center.
If you’re entering detox or residential care through our partner network before transitioning to Asana Recovery’s outpatient programs, please follow your partner facility’s specific “what to bring” instructions, which may differ from this list.
What to Bring to Your First Day
Required Documents
- Photo ID (driver's license, state ID, or passport)
- Insurance card (front and back — we'll make a copy at intake)
- List of current medications, including dosages and prescribing physicians
- List of important contacts
- Any prior treatment records or discharge summaries
Helpful to Bring
- A notepad and pen for taking notes during group or individual sessions
- A reusable water bottle
- Light snack (especially for full-day PHP sessions)
- Reading material or journal for breaks between sessions
- Any questions you want to ask your therapist or treatment team
About Medications
Bring all current prescription medications in their original prescription bottles for your first appointment. Our integrated psychiatric prescribers will review your current regimen during intake and coordinate with your existing prescribers if you have them.
If you’re on Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) for opioid use disorder (Suboxone, Sublocade, Vivitrol) or alcohol use disorder (naltrexone, acamprosate), please bring your current prescriptions and any recent MAT records.
What Not to Bring
- Alcohol, recreational substances, or unauthorized medications of any kind
- Weapons of any type
- Items featuring substance use imagery or branding
Phones and Electronics
Phones and personal electronics are permitted on-site, with the understanding that they’re put away during group and individual therapy sessions. We ask that clients respect the confidentiality of the group environment by not taking photos, recording, or using devices during sessions.
For Virtual IOP clients, you’ll need a private space with reliable internet access, a device with a camera and microphone (laptop, tablet, or smartphone), and a quiet environment where group sessions won’t be overheard.
Food and Hydration
Asana Recovery’s outpatient programs do not provide meals (outpatient clients eat at home or bring their own). For PHP clients attending 5-6 hours daily, we recommend bringing a packed lunch or planning to step out briefly during designated breaks. Light snacks are welcome throughout the day.
Water is available on-site. We encourage staying hydrated, especially during longer PHP sessions.
