Where to Start

Deciding to seek help for addiction or a mental health condition is one of the most important decisions you can make. The next question is, “Where do I start?” Who do I call? What happens when I reach out? — can feel just as overwhelming.

This page walks through exactly what happens when you contact Asana Recovery. There’s no commitment to start treatment by reaching out. The initial assessment is free, confidential, and designed to help you understand your options — whether that’s outpatient treatment with us, a referral elsewhere, or simply having more information than you started with.

What Happens When You Contact Asana Recovery

The process from first contact to starting treatment usually takes 1-3 days. Here’s what each step involves.

Step 1: Reach Out

There are four ways to start a conversation with our admissions team. Use whichever feels most comfortable:

• Call us at (949) 763-3440 — speak directly with an admissions specialist (available extended hours)
• Text us at the same number — same team, just by text
• Verify your insurance online in 60 seconds — our team contacts you with results
• Submit a contact form — for general questions or if you prefer to share details in writing first

All four routes connect to the same admissions team. Calls and texts are confidential. There's no commitment to start treatment by reaching out — many people use the initial conversation to gather information before deciding.

Step 2: Free Clinical Assessment

After your initial contact, we schedule a comprehensive clinical assessment with one of our licensed clinicians. The assessment is free, takes about 60-90 minutes, and happens by phone or video — you don't need to come in for this step.

• Substance use history — what substances, how long, current usage patterns
• Mental health screening — depression, anxiety, PTSD, ADHD, trauma history, and other conditions
• Medical history — current medications, physical health conditions, allergies
• Personal circumstances — work, family, school, support system, prior treatment experiences
• Goals and preferences — what recovery looks like for you, scheduling needs, treatment preferences

The assessment is conducted by a licensed clinician — Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT), Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), or psychologist — and is the same depth of evaluation you'd get at any quality outpatient program. There's no charge for this assessment regardless of whether you decide to enroll in treatment with us.

Step 3: Treatment Plan and Level of Care

Based on your assessment, our clinical team recommends the right level of care for your situation. Treatment matching is not one-size-fits-all—the recommendation depends on your specific clinical needs, daily commitments, severity of symptoms, and support system.

The outpatient levels of care available at Asana Recovery include:

• Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) — most intensive outpatient option, 25-30 hours per week of treatment across 5 days, typically 30 days
• Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) — 9-12 hours per week across 3-4 days, typically 90 days
• Virtual IOP — same IOP structure delivered remotely via secure video; works well for clients with mobility, geography, or scheduling constraints
• Outpatient (OP) — fewer hours per week, often a step-down from PHP or IOP, or appropriate as primary treatment for less acute presentations
• Sober Living — supportive housing in Costa Mesa or Huntington Beach for clients who need a stable environment alongside outpatient treatment

For clients who need detox or residential treatment before stepping down to outpatient, we coordinate higher-level placement through our trusted partner facilities. After stabilization, you transition into our outpatient programs at Fountain Valley. If you're managing a substance use disorder alongside a mental health condition (dual diagnosis) , our integrated treatment approach addresses both concurrently rather than sequentially. This is the standard of care recommended by SAMHSA for co-occurring conditions.

Step 4: Begin Treatment

Once your level of care is set and insurance or payment is arranged, you begin treatment. The first day includes orientation — meeting your clinical team, touring the facility (for in-person programs), reviewing your personalized treatment plan, and understanding the schedule and expectations.

Before your first day, our team helps you prepare:

• What to bring — we provide a clear checklist so you arrive prepared
• Scheduling — we work around work, school, and family commitments wherever possible
• Insurance and payment — finalized before you start, so there are no financial surprises
• Questions — your admissions contact stays available throughout the transition

From your first contact to your first day of treatment, our admissions team stays with you through every step. You're never left to navigate the process alone.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Does reaching out commit me to treatment?

No. Reaching out and completing the initial assessment carries no obligation to enroll in treatment. Many people contact us simply to understand their options, verify what their insurance covers, or get information for a loved one. The conversation is confidential and free, with no pressure to commit.

  • How long does it take to start treatment?

Most clients move from first contact to starting treatment within 1-3 days. The timeline depends on your assessment scheduling, insurance verification, and which level of care is recommended. If you're in an urgent situation, let our admissions team know — we prioritize accordingly.

  • What if I have both an addiction and a mental health condition?

That's called dual diagnosis, and it's one of our core specialties. Roughly half of people with a substance use disorder also have a co-occurring mental health condition like depression, anxiety, PTSD, or ADHD. Our integrated approach treats both concurrently — your assessment screens for both, and your treatment plan addresses both together.

  • Will my insurance cover treatment?

Asana Recovery is in-network with major providers including Anthem Blue Cross, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Aetna, Cigna, Tri-West VA, Tri-Care, ComPsych, and Provider Network of America. We also accept out-of-network PPO plans and offer private pay and payment plans. Our team verifies your specific benefits at no cost before treatment begins.

  • What if Asana Recovery isn't the right fit for me?

If our assessment determines you need a level of care we don't provide — or if we're simply not the right match for your situation — we'll tell you honestly and help point you toward appropriate resources. Our goal is your recovery, not just enrollment. Reaching out gives you clarity either way.
