As the marijuana debate continues to rage across our country, we have seen our fair share of celebrities voice their love for the little green plant (sometimes going a bit over the top). From actors to comedians and even athletes, men and women from both sides of the board have joined forces to promote this little herb. Now, some more members of the music industry are taking their steps onto the pot-laced chessboard to play the game firsthand. Even if you have not heard of the group Modest Mouse, chances are you will be captivated by their image (if you like it or not), as well as several band members’ attempts to promote marijuana for (of all things) mental health. Let’s take a closer look at why this American rock band is supporting the cannabis plant for our mental well-being.

Moon, Antarctica, and Weed

In a recent interview, Modest Mouse drummer Jeremiah Green explains that he has been smoking marijuana for years to alleviate a severe case of depression, which got so bad that (at one point) he had to leave the band entirely. Over 20 years ago, Green founded the rock band with frontman Isaac Brock, but Green realized that his condition was impeding his ability to perform. Why is this the case? According to the drummer, his severe attacks stemmed from antidepressants.

Based on Green’s report, he entered manic states and, at one point, completely exploded. At the time, Modest Mouse was still running on the success of its album The Moon & Antarctica (2000), and Green was not eager to see the group fail, especially after so much effort. After stopping his use of antidepressants, an embarrassed Green called his bandmates to say he was back on board.

Support from Friends

According to Brock and other members of Modest Mouse, Green eventually became an “expert pot-smoker” and has completely put his life back on track, mostly as a result of stopping antidepressants. Likewise, Brock and his friend occasionally smoke together with bandmate Tom Peloso.

After leaving his depression meds far behind, Green realized that marijuana was a healthier approach for him and for his bandmates.
