THE PREVALENCE OF ADDICTION IN AMERICA

MEDICATIONS THAT CAN EASE NICOTINE WITHDRAWAL

Despite the social stigma associated with drug and alcohol dependency, addiction is actually an incredibly common disease in the United States. It is important for those who are struggling with addiction to know that they are not alone.

According to a recent study conducted by the National Survey of Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) in 2016, nearly half of all Americans had consumed alcohol in the past thirty days, and half of those users admitted to binge drinking over that same time period. About one in five Americans under the age of 21 have consumed alcohol despite being underage and approximately one in ten Americans admitted to the use of illicit drugs in the past thirty days.

In addition, the NSDUH, study found that more than 20 million people reported suffering from some substance use disorder in 2016. Of that group, nearly 7.5 million people reported a drug use disorder and more than 15 million people reported an alcohol use disorder.

Dismayingly, although the NSDUH estimates that 21 million people were in need of treatment for addiction in 2016, their research shows that only about ten percent of the people who needed treatment actually received it.

While the type of treatment that works best will vary from person to person based on a variety of situations and circumstances, the support and counseling provided through treatment are invaluable to the recovery process.
