Needless to say, drugged driving is one of the most serious crimes that can be committed on the roadway. Besides putting the lives of the impaired drivers in danger, other people, including sober drivers, passengers, and possible pedestrians, can also fall victim to a deadly accident caused by drugs. In this case, addiction hurts both the addict and general public around him or her. In an interesting twist, though, one Australian state seems to be taking a more aggressive approach to this crime. Let’s take a closer look and see how Western Australia is dealing with drugged driving cases.
Major Changes around Here
According to an announcement from the State Government, Western Australia may soon be initiating severe penalties toward individuals who are driving while under the influence of drugs. At this time, drugged drivers will face a fine of $500 AUD, but, under the leadership of the McGowan government, that fine will increase to a hefty $1,250 AUD. As Police Minister Michelle Roberts explains, this new measure would realign WA with the rest of the Australian states.
Likewise, the McGowan government also wants to increase penalties for people who are caught driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol.
Reflecting Community Expectations
As Roberts explains further, the WA government wants to align these penalties to match the expectations of community members, which is done in every state in Australia excluding WA. She and other officials have been fully aware that people pose a much larger threat if they have consumed a combination of drugs and alcohol, a problem that becomes a public emergency if that person drives. Under the new law, for example, a motorist who had a blood-alcohol content of 0.08% and had consumed crystal meth would face a $3,400 AUD fine and a 6-month disqualification of his or her license.
