As Police Minister Michelle Roberts explains, this new measure would realign WA with the rest of the Australian states.
Likewise, the McGowan government also wants to increase penalties for people who are caught driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol.
Reflecting Community Expectations
As Roberts explains further, the WA government wants to align these penalties to match the expectations of community members, which is done in every state in Australia excluding WA. She and other officials have been fully aware that people pose a much larger threat if they have consumed a combination of drugs and alcohol, a problem that becomes a public emergency if that person drives. Under the new law, for example, a motorist who had a blood-alcohol content of 0.08% and had consumed crystal meth would face a $3,400 AUD fine and a 6-month disqualification of his or her license.
