In the wake of a continuously growing wave of acceptance in the United States, the little green plant called marijuana has yet to influence the legal standpoint of several states. Although the Pacific and the East Coast have considerable players in the market (notably Oregon and Massachusetts), the Midwest is a mixed bag in itself. Although Ohio and Illinois have accepted pot for medical purposes, Indiana has not apparently changed its tactics. However, according to a recent report, the Indiana Democrats have added marijuana legalization to its 2019 agenda, which has the national pot community buzzing with excitement. Ultimately, when lawmakers in the Hoosier State begin working again on January 3, 2018, Indiana State Senator Karen Tallian will introduce two new bills for marijuana legalization. Let’s take a closer look and find out more.

Two Bills for Cannabis Regulation

Since 2011, Indiana Senator Karen Tallian has been a staunch supporter of marijuana legalization and has served as a major voucher for initiatives for the little green plant. Although she was subjected to opposition in the Indiana House, Senator Tallian still advanced her proposed study on Indiana marijuana criminalization. However, her efforts to decriminalize marijuana in 2012 and 2013 and to legalize small traces of the drug in 2014 never made it past committee hearings. In fact, Senator Tallian’s zealous support for this plant in a conservative state like Indiana has resulted in her receiving the nickname “The Pot Legislator.”

Using a Hemp Program for Support

In March 2018, Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb approved and signed a bill that completely legalized the production of CBD-oil (derived from hemp) in his state. Ultimately, this law (SB 52) permits residents of Indiana to have full access to this cannabinoid (which does not produce a “high” like THC). According to Tallian, though, Indiana may have legalized CBD, but it still does not have a program for regulating these products. Ultimately, her endeavors could still receive future blocks from the Republican Party, which holds a great majority in the Indiana General Assembly.
