MEXICO APPROVES ITS FIRST 38 MARIJUANA PRODUCTS

A CLOSER LOOK AT THE LOOMING OPIOID CRISIS IN MEXICO

Needless to say, Mexico has pretty much made history not once, but twice, over the past couple of months of 2018. In fact, on October 31, our southern neighbor officially shattered pot prohibition and made the next step toward legalizing the little green plant. Based on set precedents, adults of legal age have the natural, human right to indulge in marijuana as a recreational or medicinal activity. While these drugs must be regulated, that does not mean prohibition is the answer, according to Mexican officials. Now, after many years, the public’s collective patience is finally paying off. Recently, the country made plans to introduce its first 38 marijuana products (CBD-based) into its borders, and the pot communities across North America are buzzing. Let’s take a closer look at this situation and find out more.

Heading South of the Border for CBD

Last week, the Federal Commission for Protection Against Sanitary Risks (Mexico’s version of the United States’ Food and Drug Administration) approved a total of 38 marijuana products that contain cannabidiol (CBD), the cannabinoid that does not cause a “high.” Among the long list of items include gummy candies, capsules, topicals, and a CBD-infused energy drink (that Mexicans can get without a prescription).

As of now, the government has approved seven companies to sell these items. Overall, four facilities are based in Mexico, two in the United States, and one in Spain:

  • Acietes Orgánicos de América (Organic Oils of America)
  • CBD Life
  • CBD Science
  • Endo Natura
  • Farmacias Magistrales (Master Farmacies)
  • Finat México
  • Med Mex

No Highs in Mexico

Keep in mind that all of these products will only contain CBD. THC (the potent psychoactive agent in marijuana) will be reduced to a maximum of 1% per item. At this time, the only company that can import raw materials for the production of THC-laced marijuana products is Farmacias Magistrales. However, on part with medical practices in some parts of the United States, the Mexican government will only allow medical marijuana patients to receive the THC-laced plants, edibles, and other products.
