SCIENTISTS ARE WORKING ON A NONOPIOID PAINKILLER FOR PATIENTS

MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS RECOMMEND “CASCADE OF CARE MODEL” FOR THE OPIOID CRISIS

How can patients get pain relief without the looming terror of addiction? This is a question that has been blossoming in the minds of civilians and doctors across the country as the Opioid Crisis continues to spread. Although people who have undergone surgery or live with chronic pain need immediate relief, unfortunately, one of the best options just happens to be one of the most dangerous drugs on the planet: opioid painkillers. So, is there a way to get immediate relief without becoming an abuser or an addict? As unbelievable as this may sound, scientists may be closer to developing a drug that could solve all these problems and (if approved) throw a wrench into the Opioid Crisis for good. Let’s take a closer look at the new nonopioid drug that is currently in the making.

Bioactive Lipids vs. Opioids

Recently, researchers at the Virginia Tech School of Neuroscience teamed up with the University of San Diego and the National Institute of Health (NIH) to create a nonopioid drug that could help patients find relief without the gnawing worry of addiction. Ultimately, the group developed the compound (ML351) to target enzyme 15-Lipoxygenase-1, a lipid that is directly related to chronic pain that cannot be relieved by OTC medications. As a result, patients suffering from this problem will turn to powerful opioids (which can ultimately lead to addiction). Overall, the scientists hope that ML351 will target this bioactive lipid and help people who cannot find relief for inflammation and pain.

Living with Chronic Pain

According to Matt Buczynski (assistant professor of neuroscience), the chronic activation of a sensation (pain) that is intended to protect people from harm can cripple a human being. Nowadays, only a few drugs on the market can suppress the effects of chronic inflammation and pain (particularly the type caused by autoimmune diseases). In a miraculous turn of events, ML351 can actually suppress these receptors that automatically kickstart chronic pain and could prove beneficial for people who suffer from additional type of discomfort. Could we be one step closer to ending the Opioid Crisis?
