The opioid crisis has brought unfathomable devastation to towns and cities across the United States, and no generation has been harder hit by the epidemic than millennials, According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the fatal overdose rate for people between the ages of 25 and 34 doubled in just two years between 2014 and 2016. The fact that this dramatic rise occurred in such a short period of time has left many concerned about this growing problem.
Medical experts caution against drawing a conclusion that millennials are predisposed to opioid addiction, however, as it is more likely that millennials have been particularly affected simply because of the timing of the crisis. Notably, the emergence of incredibly potent and dangerous synthetic opioids like Fentanyl, combined with the fact that a decrease in treatment options, an insufficient regulatory regime, and a quick-fix culture have led opioids to become overprescribed, have coalesced to create a perfect storm for millennials.
