Currently, California is at the helm of states that have legalized medical and recreational uses for marijuana. However, did you ever consider how weed and wine could be sold through the same market? According to a recent story that appeared in the news, cannabis growers will be partnering up with wine companies in the Golden State to develop appellations for marijuana products. Interestingly enough, some of the brands might contain the names of famous wines. Let’s take a closer look at the world of luxury weed and wine on the West Coast of the United States and see how it could impact the marijuana debate.
Elegant Weed
For the winegrower or big business owner, the term “appellations” refers to geographic hot spots where vineyards are set up and wine is marketed. At times, they are named after regions on the world map. For example, Champagne and Chianti are derived from areas in France and Italy, respectively. In every case, these brand names are strictly regulated to promote quality and efficiency. However, this market could easily change thanks to the introduction of a new, herbal player.
For the California cannabis market, certain products may be adopting the brand named Humboldt and Mendocino, two regions that are cornucopias of marijuana distribution in the state. Likewise, research has indicated the soil and temperatures in these portions of California promote ideal growth for cannabis plants. In the same manner as wine, growers will be promoting these marijuana brands to high-end buyers as “designer plants.”
Plans for the Future
By 2021, the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) wants to make this vision a reality by establishing these artisan brands. In a recent interview with Forbes magazine, an agent from the CalCannabis Cultivation Licensing group explained their current process of selecting appellations for marijuana growth. More recently, the CDFA has struck relationships with regional growers to develop these portions of land.
Regardless of arguments against the drug in several states, it appears that California is still pushing forward with the cultivation of marijuana.
