THE TRUE NATURE OF DRUG ADDICTION IN INDIANA

THE TRUE NATURE OF DRUG ADDICTION IN INDIANA

Simply put, Indiana might possibly have one of the worst drug problems in the United States, and, given how severe the impact of the Opioid Crisis has been, that’s saying a lot. According to a new study produced by WalletHub, the Hoosier State has been listed as the 14th worst hub for drug abuse and addiction (based on the rates of drug use, response rates of law enforcement, and treatment availability). Needless to say, Indiana has ranked poorly in each category, not exactly a promising notion for a nation currently fighting one of the worst public health emergencies in history. So, how bad is the rate of drug abuse and addiction in the State of Indiana? Let’s take a closer look and find out.

Nothing but Painkillers and Meth

As statistics have shown, the current readout for this Midwestern state does not look good. Based on specific factors in the study, Indiana earned the #1 spot in the United States for incidences related to methamphetamine labs (with the 2nd-most frequent meth lab seizures taking place in Starke County in Northwestern Indiana). Researchers also confirmed that Indiana earned 6th spot for the most frequent incidences involving drug-related crimes on college campuses and the 9th spot for opioid painkiller use (109 drugs for every 100 Indiana residents).

A Poor Living Environment

According to Jill Gonzales (a senior analyst who works for WalletHub), you know a situation has become a health emergency when the number of drug prescriptions outrank victims. As she explains, the metrics for Indiana measure 85 drugs for every 100 Indiana residents. Recently, however, the States of Indiana passed a law dictating that first-time opioid users can only have a prescription for 7 days, a ruling that Dr. Shaun Kondamuri (pain specialist at Munster) supports. As he said, if you provide patients with a whole jar of drugs, they will definitely abuse them.
