THE TRUTH ABOUT DETOX

The thought of detox is often enough to stir up panic in an addict. Once a user makes the decision to become clean, detox is a crucial step forward. This critical process involves ridding the body of harmful substances.

During this phase of treatment, addicts suffer physically and mentally from withdrawal. Symptoms can begin with a few hours or take days to show up. Some of the most common symptoms addicts have during detox are:

  • Headaches
  • Extreme body aching
  • Sleep issues
  • Depression and anxiety
  • Extreme nervousness
  • Nausea and/or vomiting
  • Spikes in blood pressure
  • Erratic breathing
  • Heart palpitations
  • Increased heartbeat
  • Hallucinations
  • Seizures

Symptoms can last anywhere from 3 to 10 days for most patients although it can take longer for some drugs to leave the system depending on the type of drug and the length of time an addict has been using.

Going through a detox program is extremely helpful for addicts. Our detox program at Asana Recovery helps addicts by monitoring them on a 24-hour basis as they go through detox. Patients are often offered medications to help minimize withdrawal symptoms as they detox. Medical professionals are charged with distribution of detox medications so patients are able to receive the relief they need without any complications.

If you or a loved one wants to seek treatment for an addiction, it is important for them to contact trained counselors to see if detox will help them. An initial phone screening with an addiction counselor will help both the program and the patient understand the detox process. Patients need to understand what is ahead of them and the challenges they will face.

After the patient is accepted into treatment, they will meet with a team of medical professionals, review their medical history, complete blood work, and undergo a physical and psychological health screening. These tests will be used to determine the length of treatment needed and what types of treatment will help the patient the most.

Is detoxing easy?

Detox is often considered the most difficult part of overcoming an addiction. During detox, addicts often have extreme cravings that cause intense physical and mental reactions. Although medications are used for this process quite often, they are typically tapered off over time so addicts have to learn how to adjust to the changes they feel.

After detox, an inpatient treatment is highly recommended. At Asana Recovery, we offer an exceptional treatment program that helps patients figure out what caused their addiction, what triggers their use, and what they can do to refuse using in the future. It is important to learn and develop skills necessary for addicts to resist temptation once they return to society.

Getting the proper treatment goes a long way in ensuring patients are able to deal properly with triggers, cope with past issues, and experience fewer relapses. Call our admissions staff at (949) 438-4504 to learn more about our detox and inpatient treatment options.
