WHY IS ADDICTION COMMON IN TEENS

CALIFORNIA KINDERGARTNER ALLOWED TO BRING CANNABIS MEDICATION TO SCHOOL

Teenagers are the most likely to suffer from drug and alcohol addiction at some point in their adolescence. No matter how many times they are told that drugs are dangerous or warned about the trouble they will get into if caught with drugs, they don’t stop. Parents can often feel discouraged or like they failed as a parent if their child develops an addiction at an early age. There are many factors that contribute to teen drug use that are out of the parents, and teens, control. Here are a few of those factors so that both parents and their children can understand the dangers they face.

Peer Pressure

One of the most common reasons for teens to start abusing drugs is because those around them are doing it and they want to fit in. Teenagers are in a stage of their life where they are trying to find themselves, and because of this they highly value the opinions of their peers. Once they start taking drugs because their friends tell them to it will quickly turn into them having to do drugs because they are addicted.

Surrounded by Drug Culture:

Drugs and alcohol are so prevalent in culture today that its hard to avoid. They are always shown in movies and TV and constantly talked about on the news to the point where it might spark curiosity in a young mind. This curiosity might lead to a teen trying drugs, and while some may be able to stop on their own, most will quickly become addicted and be unable to stop.

Rebelling

As stated before, kids are constantly told from an early age never to go near any recreational drugs, or horrible things will happen. While it is good to warn kids about drug use, the constant hammering home that drugs are bad might lead an already rebellious teen to start taking drugs to spite their parents and teachers. While this might start off as a way to anger parents, it will quickly become uncontrollable and lead to a dangerous addiction.

At this point, many parents will ask what a definitive way to keep their kids away from drugs is? The answer is, unfortunately, that there is no definitive way. Parents can try any tactic they want, but at the end of the day, they can’t always be there to stop their kids from making bad decisions. The best thing a parent can do for a child is to be honest with them about drugs and their effect on people. Don’t try to scare them into not taking drugs, just let them know you care. Another thing a parent needs to do is always be loving and supportive of their child, let them know even if they become addicted you will be there to help them through a recovery program.
