When you take a closer look at the wild world of Australia, you can easily understand how illegal drug trading could easily take place in a continent like this. On the east, sweeping jungles trace through steep, smoky mountains. Across the center and the west of the Land Down Under, a massive landscape of burning hot sands called the Outback stretches for thousands of miles. Peeling back the cities, Australia contains large numbers of uninhabited landscapes that could easily conceal drug trades. Still, one question remains: how do smugglers get the drugs into the country? An impenetrable landscape is (obviously) impenetrable. So, how do these illegal substances leak into one of the most secure continents on our planet? The answer is simple: airplanes. Let’s take a closer look and find out some more information.
Big Money, Big Drugs
Throughout the years, reports have shed light on how the illegal drug business in Australia has become a profitable avenue for many dealers (due to its remote location and frequent border stops). However, as more recent reports have indicated, the rate of illegal drug consumption has become so high in Australia that dealers and manufacturers are taking creative routes to bypass border security. In raids conducted in early January 2019, Australian authorities arrested eight individuals who were reputedly members of an international crime unit that had been shipping drugs (notably cocaine and heroin) into the country over the past 5 years. (Even more disturbing, authorities estimate the value of these illegal drugs was $14 million, on average.)
All Aboard, Drugs Included
So, how are these crafty crooks bypassing border patrols? According to the Australian authorities, a flight attendant on a Malaysian Air flight had been a key figure in the operation. As reported, the man took the drug shipment from Malaysia and stuffed the substances into his body (as well as luggage). Later, he dropped off the drugs to syndicate connections in Sydney and Melbourne. (Authorities did not specify if other members of the flight crew were involved in the crime.)
While Australia has suffered from a string of prescription drug-related deaths over the past years, the government has still been trying to crack down on illegal drugs shipped in via airplanes (believed to be another culprit behind the country’s drug crisis). In fact, the Rand Europe Research Institute has confirmed that Australia is responsible for about 11% of dark net sales in the international drug trade. Now, you might understand why addiction is such a problem for this country.
