For decades, the Opioid Crisis has continued to plague the streets, alleyways, residential homes, and hospitals of our beautiful country, but, thanks to the efforts of a government organization and a renowned children’s education company, we might be one step closer to bringing this epidemic to a close. To fight the ever-growing collection of opioid and heroin addiction, the United States Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and Discovery Education (a huge provider for K-12 classrooms) launched a nationwide program called “Operation Prevention”. Developed for students from middle school to high school, this initiative seeks to provide high-quality drug education to children and young adults and will arm young people with powerful tools to prevent the disease of addiction from spreading further. Let’s take a closer look at what this program offers.
Lesson Plans for Teachers
As part of Operation Prevention, officials will provide teachers with standards-aligned digital lesson plans that bring a realistic perspective on scientific studies and health science. Likewise, the program will equip these teachers with an ever-changing curriculum focusing on how opioids impact the human body and the mind. Likewise, packages will include companion guides (for instructors) that provide lesson support and additional resources about drugs.
Interactive Resources for Students
Through Operation Prevention, students will immerse themselves in e-learning modules combining interactive elements, animation, and videos to provide an engaging classroom experience. With these tools, middle school and high school students can investigate how opioids negatively affect our minds and bodies. Likewise, students will complete pre-and-post-assessments and read companion guides that can be accessed by parents and teachers.
Toolkits for Parents
Overall, Operation Prevention has also been designed to provide knowledge and resources to help parents feel empowered and confident as they teach their children about the dangers of opioids. Likewise, parents can also use these tools to kickstart conversations about these drugs, understand how to recognize warning signs of opioid addiction, and (most importantly) take action where action is needed. Prevention and intervention tools are also at a parent’s disposal to help their children create awareness about the Opioid Crisis.
