Sometimes, every time the world attempts to attack drug-related crime, newer and more dangerous substances and practices emerge to take their place. While the U.S. and Australia battle opioid epidemics on our fronts, our associates in England are fighting to put an end to a practice that, in a very strange twist, used to be controlled. According to the latest reports from the BBC, a new black market has emerged in England and has given rise to shady practices, all rooted in something called “legal highs.” According to authorities, police and health officials have been trying to flush out the culprits behind these synthetic psychoactive substances. Let’s take a closer look at the underground drug market that has emerged in South East England.
That’s Not Marijuana!
As part of a recent undercover investigation, officials discovered that drug addicts are purchasing a string of deadly substances from street dealers and illegal portions of our Internet (the dark web), all stemming from the fact that “head shops” recently closed down. Accordingly, the Home Office confirmed it is trying to crack down on the trade of these potentially life-threatening substances. Ultimately, substances that have been designed to mimic marijuana and other substances (in the same fashion as synthetic cannabinoids) were offered in these “head shops,” but legal officials ordered these buildings to be shut down in 2016.
Two years later, BBC officials confirmed that these synthetics were being sold in shady locations like prison and the dark web. In fact, as part of a secret operation, one drug dealer sold £10 worth of spice, which lab tests confirmed to be a synthetic cannabinoid.
No Brand, Deadly Bargain
Given the fact that these substances are no longer sold under flashy brand names, the danger has become even worse for drug addicts. In a recent interview with the BBC, one English drug addict claims that this new drug is more dangerous than previous “legal highs.” In that light, according to the Home Office, prisoners and homeless people are using more spice now than they did when head shops were still open.
