At some point, we have to ask ourselves a very important question: how much weed is too much? Now, this inquiry would have held a much heavier meaning back in the 1970s, when the little green plant was far from a reputable drug. Nowadays, however, marijuana is a more welcome part of our society (at least for the multitude of pro-cannabis groups across the country). What about the case of this fragrant herb in Canada, though? After all, our neighbor to the north officially legalized the plant through the historic Cannabis Act on October 17, 2018. So, why do they seem to be experiencing bizarre problems like this one? Let’s take a closer look at how and (most importantly) why a Canadian law firm is using air fresheners to promote weed-impaired driving laws.
The Case for Breath Tests
Starting on December 18, 2018, as part of routine stops, Canadian police will have the ability to require drivers accused of being pot-impaired (simply put) to take a breath test. At this time, officers can only have a substantial suspicion and a legitimate reason to accuse this person of being impaired.
Nevertheless, Paul Doroshenko (defense attorney at Acumen Law) believes this new law will only confuse the public, not help the situation at hand. As a result of this new regulation, as he suggests, police officers will be able to ask for random samples. Now, the public will be required to provide samples for a breath test based on the tiniest of suspicions. While this is not necessarily a bad thing, the new law does not have a string of supporters.
Why Air Fresheners?
So why is this law firm using air fresheners to promote this new law? Simply put, Doroshenko hopes the devices will provide protection to drivers who are not impaired. After consuming cannabis via smoking, the fragrance of the plant will stick to clothes and hair for days. As a result, people who were simply sitting around smokers (without indulging) could be susceptible to a roadside check. Although Doroshenko has reassured the public that he does respect the law, the concept of concealing drug fragrances could potentially raise some eyebrows.
