When it comes to the tooth-and-nail world of comedy, many men and women have fought to become some big-name celebrities on and off the stage, but for every Tim Allen and Eddie Murphy, you have underground stars like Rob Delaney. Unlike a variety of comedians who started in coffee houses and bars or walked on talk show stages, Delaney gained attention on Twitter back in 2009, making him one of the first comedians to ever gain fame by publishing comedic content on social media. Later, the writer earned a spot on Paste magazine’s Funniest People on Twitter (2010), and he became the first winner of the Funniest Person on Twitter Award from Comedy Central (2012). What you might not know about Delaney, though, is that some moments of his life have been far from hilarious. Let’s take a closer look at how comedian Rob Delaney celebrated his sobriety and how his life could have taken a different turn.

A Literal Bloodbath

In the only fitting course of action, Rob Delaney announced via Twitter that he had celebrated 16 years of sobriety back in 2018, but he also shed light on how dangerous his lifestyle had become. In fact, based on the information in the tweet, we might not be enjoying his jokes today. As Delaney explains, over 16 years ago, he had consumed large quantities of alcohol to the point that he lost consciousness while driving, resulting in a severe accident. After his car slammed into a warehouse, police pulled his broken, bloody body out of the wreckage before placing him in a wheelchair, which was carted off to prison.

Blackouts have always been a norm for Delaney. As he points out, he would drink heavily with his friends when they were 16, but he wouldn’t think twice about it. After waking up in the hospital bed, however, Delaney’s first thought was to ask the cops if he had killed anyone, to which they responded “no.” However, the crash proved to be the wakeup call he needed.

When Life Gives You Lemons…

If anything, Delaney’s tragic experience not only inspired him to become a healthier individual but may have also leaked its way into his comedy. In the third season of his hit show Catastrophe (2015-present), the character he portrays suffers a dangerous drunk driving accident. Perhaps, if anything, Delaney’s story puts some value on the old statement about lemons and lemonade.
