When to comes to solving numerous problems around the world, countries adopt similar or drastically different measures to combat these anomalies in our society, and the battle against drug addiction is certainly no exception. For example, although the United States has yet to legalize marijuana nationwide and at the federal level, Canada has fully legalized the little green plant. Likewise, Australia is tackling the opioid crisis with full force, while Portugal opts for a gentler response to drug problems in the streets. So, when it comes to terms with nations from different continents, how does our country fare against the nations of Europe? Let’s take a closer look at the differences and similarities and see what turns up.

Monitoring the Future…Closely

Based on a recent study via Monitoring the Future (MTF), researchers analyzed the United States and 35 countries in Europe and conducted studies on a group of test subjects ranging from 15 to 16 years of age. Here is some of the information the analysis turned up:

  • The U.S. and Europe has experienced a drop in cigarette use among the teenage demographic.
  • Marijuana use has increased amongst U.S. and European teens.
  • 35% of U.S. students have experimented with illegal drugs (second to Czech Republic at 27%), while 15% of European students have done the same.
  • The United States and France are tied for marijuana consumption: 31%.
  • Czech Republic reported the highest amount of pot use at 37%, with Moldova ranking the lowest at 4%.
  • The United States has a higher percentage of amphetamine (10%) than the rate in Europe (2%).
  • American teen cocaine use is estimated at 3%, in contrast to Europe at 2%.

How Europe Differs Significantly

Although controlled-drug abuse and addiction are much higher in the United States, Europe does boast a higher rate of alcohol and cigarette use than its American cousins. Here are some examples:

  • Paired with Iceland, the United States has the lowest rate of cigarette use at 3%, while Europeans smoke cigarettes at a rate of 12%.
  • U.S. teenagers consume less alcohol (22%) than European teens (48%).
